Chapter Twelve FRONT HERDER/SPACER INSTRUCTIONS

Location
Stand about three feet back of the finish line (in the
chute) and to the side, with your body turned so that you do not block the
entrance to the chute. DO NOT walk across or stand in front of the finish
line.
What to do
- When your chute is open, waive your arms and
shout to draw runners. attention to your chute.
- Assertively encourage the runners by saying,
"Please keep moving," "Please don. t stop," "Please jog all the way to
the back of the chute."
- If runners need assistance, help them back to a mid-chute herder who
will take over from there.
Primary Responsibilities
- Whenever your chute is closed, for any reason,
turn and follow the last runner all the way to the back of the chute.
- Make visual contact with the tag puller and, if
available, hand him a "CHUTE CLOSED" card.
- Then turn and hustle back to the front of the chute to be ready when
it reopens.
Tips for Herders
- Be polite, but be assertive!
- Congratulate the runners for a great race.
- Use the word "please" a lot.
