Chapter Thirteen
MID-CHUTE HERDER INSTRUCTIONS

Return to Race Manual Table of Contents

Primary Responsibilities

  • Keep runners moving to the back of the chute.
  • Do not allow runners to switch chutes--for any reason!
  • If runners need physical attention, assist them to the back of the chute or, if the problem seems serious, notify the chute supervisor to contact medical personnel.

BACK-OF-CHUTE HERDER INSTRUCTIONS

Primary Responsibilities

  • Keep runners moving and encourage them by saying, "Please pull your bib tag." (This should not be said by the mid-chute herders because it tends to slow down the flow within the chute.)
  • Do not allow runners to switch chutes--for any reason!
  • If a runner is ill or injured and is being assisted out of the chute by another herder or medical personnel, remove the tag from their race bib and give it to the tag puller at the end of the chute.

Tips for Herders

  • Be polite, but be assertive!
  • Congratulate the runners for a great race.
  • Use the word "please" a lot.
  • Enjoy yourself.
