Half Marathon Distance Sees Nearly Two Million Finishers in 2015

WICHITA, Kan. - (May 25, 2016) - After a record year in 2014, the number of U.S. Half Marathon finishers declined in 2015. Following similar trends other race distances, the half marathon distance experienced a net loss of 3% year-over-year.  

 

A total of 1,986,600 runners finished a half marathon in the U.S. in 2015, down from the record high of just over two million finishers in 2014. While participation dropped, there were a record 2,700 U.S. half marathon events run in 2015, up from 2,500 in 2014.

Top U.S. Half Marathon

The Brooklyn Half Marathon retains its #1 spot as the U.S.’s largest Half Marathon with 26,479 finishers.  The top 15 Half Marathons in the U.S. remained fairly consistent, with minor movements overall.  There were 29 Half Marathons with 10,000+ finishers.

Gender & Age Composition

Gender composition has remained unchanged with females representing 61% U.S. Half Marathon finishers.  The mean age of finishers has remained fairly constant: 36 for females and 39 for males in 2015.  44% of finishers were masters (40 and older), a record high percentage.
