Executive Director of Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon to share insights gained working with the Council for Responsible Sport since 2011

CINCINNATI - Iris Simpson Bush and her Greening of the Pig team leader, Denise Hovey, have a deep personal commitment and vast experience in the process of continual improvement that goes into producing a more responsible event. Attendees at the upcoming 2018 Running USA Industry Conference, to be held in Austin, Texas, will have a chance to hear about the Flying Pig’s best practices and share their own during the Sustainability Programs Race Camp, scheduled for 1:30-3:15 pm on Monday, February 12.

Iris has been with the Flying Pig marathon since its inception in a number of capacities, from board member to executive director, and was recently named 2017 MarathonFoto/Road Race Management Race Director of the Year. Under her leadership, the Flying Pig Marathon has an ongoing commitment to research and implementation of policies and procedures to be a more sustainable event. After first earning certification from the Council for Responsible Sport in 2011, the event successfully achieved silver certification in 2013, gold certification in 2015 and, last year, was invited to become one of a select few Inspire certified events at the gold level.

Iris will share detail related to the development of a robust sustainability program that adds both quality and value to the event, including for the first time in 2018, the addition of a new sponsorship category—sustainability—claimed for the upcoming 20th Flying Pig by the Melink Corporation.

The Council’s Inspire program—so named because events are tasked with inspiring other events to follow in their footsteps—expects its members to mentor other events, and the Sustainability Programs Race Camp provides a wonderful opportunity for event organizers to be mentored by one of the best.

As Running USA Conference attendees begin to build their conference agenda, we at the Council encourage you to block out 1:30-3:15 pm on Monday, February 12 for this special Race Camp.

For those not attending the Running USA Conference but that would like to explore responsibility issues at your event(s) with the Council for Responsible Sport, please direct correspondence to Shelley Villalobos at Shelley@CouncilForResponsibleSport.org.
