U.S. Marathons Hit Another All-Time High With 550,637 Finishers; TCS New York City Marathon Continues to Hold Largest Marathon Title

 

Running USAWICHITA, Kan. - (May 13, 2015) - Another year, another rise in finishers over the marathon distance. In the Running USA 2014 Marathon Report, there were a record number of finishers - 550,637, up from 541,000 in 2013*. There were also a record 1,200+ marathon events in 2014.

Gender split has remained consistent compared to previous years: 57% males (311,366 – all-time high) and 43% females (239,271 – all-time high) finishers. 48% of finishers were masters, 40 and older (264,305, also a new higher overall and percent).

2014 marks the slowest average finisher times since 2005 at 4:19:27 for males and 4:44:19 for females.

The following tables and lists represent a summary of the demographics and stats and trends for U.S. marathons and worldwide rankings. Per the tables below, U.S. marathon demographics - gender, age group, median age and median time - have remained essentially static in recent years.

Number of U.S. Marathons Exceeds 1,200 - New Record

Another marathon record includes 98 Marathons with 1,000+ finishers, up from 92 in 2013 and besting the previous high mark of 94 in 2011 and 2012.

In 2014, there were a 1,200-plus U.S. marathons contested, another record; compared to approximately 300 marathons in 2000.

New York City Largest Ever - Again; 23 Marathons Worldwide Had More Than 10,000 Finishers in 2014

The TCS New York City Marathon retains its #1 spot as the world's largest marathon with 50,386 finishers, a record number of finishers. Six marathons New York City, Chicago, Paris, London, Tokyo and Boston - had more than 31,000 finishers, while 23 marathons worldwide had more than 10,000 finishers. Also, 18 marathons had more than 15,000 finishers. In addition, the U.S. represented 5 of the top 10 largest marathons in the world, while Japan represented 5 of the top 15 largest marathons in the world.
