Keflezighi, Browne Headline USA Men's 5K Championship at CVS/pharmacy Downtown
Top International Field also expected to produce fast times

PROVIDENCE - (September 12, 2002) - For the first time since 1998, the USA Men's 5K Championship will be contested as the CVS/pharmacy Downtown 5K in Providence, Rhode Island hosts the national road championship on Sunday, September 15. A top American men's field including U.S. Olympian Meb Keflezighi and 1998 U.S. 5K champion Dan Browne is expected.

A deep international men's field - which includes Falmouth champion James Koskei, Irish Olympian and local runner Mark Carroll and Australian Olympian Shaun Creighton - also will be competing, but as Open athletes while the women's field is equally talented with Asmae Leghzaoui (8K and 10K world record holder), Uta Pippig (2001 winner), Libbie Hickman, Elva Dryer and Elana Meyer who set a world 5K road record (15:10) here in 1994.

"CVS is proud to return as the title sponsor of this premier Rhode Island event and the state's largest road race," said Jack Kramer, Senior Vice President of CVS/pharmacy and Chairman of the CVS Downtown 5K. "We are especially delighted to bring the USA Men's 5K Championships to Rhode Island for the first time."

Keflezighi, 27, from San Diego is one of the favorites not only for the U.S. title, but also overall. Thus far in 2002, the Team USA California athlete has won four national titles (12K cross country, 15K roads, 10,000m track and 7 mile roads) and in May at Stanford, the UCLA graduate ran 27:20.15, the #2 all-time U.S. 10,000m performance behind his U.S. record. His 5000m personal record is 13:11.77.

Browne of Portland, Ore. and Kyle Baker of Mason, Mich. are running well too as evidenced by their exciting duel at the USA 20K Championships at New Haven on Labor Day - Browne edged Baker, 59:21 to 59:22. Boulder, Colo. resident Clint Wells who finished 6th (13:36.22) at the USA 5000m Championships in June also should be a top contender.

Other top Americans expected at Providence are:

Mark Andrews (Canisteo, NY), Scott Bagley (Mendon, NY), Chris Banks (Springfield, VA), Trent Briney (Rochester Hills, MI), Richie Brinker (Rochester Hills, MI), Kevin Doyle (Rochester Hills, MI), Mike Fox (Rochester Hills, MI), Donnie Franzen (Rochester Hills, MI), Matt Gabrielson (St. Paul, MN), Joe Gibson (Rochester Hills, MI), Chad Johnson (Portland, OR), Ryan Kirkpatrick (Boulder, CO), Jason Lehmkuhle (St. Paul, MN), Brian Sell (Rochester Hills, MI), Matt Thull (Wauwatosa, WI) and Justin Young (Rochester Hills, MI)

The race offers over $51,000 in prize money with $5000 to the winners and an additional $15,000 for the USA Men's Championship ($5000, $3000, $2000, $1500, $1000, $900, $700, $500, $300 and $100). There is also a $25,000 World Record bonus (to break 13:00/14:54) and a $5000 time incentive bonus (1st Man 13:10 or under/1st Woman 15:10 or under). Time incentives and world records are not cumulative.

Before the 5K Race, the Youth Races will be held in age categories ranging from ages 5 and under to ages 14-15 beginning at 9:00AM in front of the Providence Place Mall. This year, the CVS/pharmacy Downtown 5K has invited Rhode Island schools to bring their student athletes to compete in these races. Schools that bring a team of 25 or more runners will be eligible to participate in a drawing for a $5,000 grant to one school's physical education program.

The CVS/pharmacy Downtown 5K is co-sponsored by Dodge Dealers of New England, GTECH and Pfizer. Media sponsor is Citadel Communications. Running shoe sponsor is ASICS. For more information, please call the Race Hotline at (401) 751-7287 or visit the race website at: http://www.cvsdowntown5k.com

The Downtown 5K is also part of the USA Running Circuit (USARC), a USA Track & Field road series and thus, important USARC points are at stake for the top 10 U.S. finishers. The 2002 USARC, the eighth edition for the men and seventh for the women, offers over $340,000 in championship prize money plus a $25,000 grand prix purse.

Top performances at the national championship by Keflezighi (currently #3 in the USARC standings), Baker (#4), Browne (#5) and Clint Wells (#10) will move them up in the standings with two races remaining (Twin Cities Marathon - Sept 29 and Food World Senior Bowl 10K - Nov 2). USARC points at the Twin Cities Marathon will be doubled.

JEFF SCHIEBLER TO MAKE HIS MARATHON DEBUT AT NEW YORK
Canada's best male distance runner tipped for new national record

NEW YORK - (Sept. 12, 2002) - Canadian national record holder in the 3,000m, 5,000m, 10,000m and half-marathon, Jeff Schiebler will take on the longest challenge of his career when he makes his marathon debut at the 2002 New York City Marathon on Sunday Nov. 3rd it was announced today by race director, Allan Steinfeld.

"Jeff is a track veteran so November 3rd will be a step up for him, but he's primed for it," said Steinfeld, the president and CEO of the New York Road Runners. "Canada may very well have a new national record holder for the marathon on their hands and we are proud that it could happen here at the New York City Marathon."

The Canadian national marathon record of 2:10:09 set by Jerome Drayton at Fukuoka, Japan, Dec. 7, 1975 is one of the longest standing road running records in the world.

A native of Vancouver, Schiebler (SHEEB-ler) has spent the last six years living and training with the NEC Electronics Team in Japan. Schiebler, 29, is a two-time Olympian at 10,000m in 1996 and 2000.

This year Schiebler represented Canada at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England in the 5,000m (13th place, 13:49.02) and 10,000m (6th place, 28:29.22).

Schiebler holds the Canadian national records at 3,000m (7:43.42, Aug. 25, 1998 Lausanne, Switzerland); 5,000m (13:13.96, Sept 1, 1998, Berlin); 10,000m (27:36.01, May 4, 2001, Palo Alto) and half-marathon (1:01:28, Jan 15, 1999, Tokyo).

The men's and women's champions of the 33rd running of the NYC Marathon will each earn $80,000 plus a Pontiac Vibe. The 2002 New York City Marathon is expected to draw an open field of around 30,000 participants.

Inaugurated in 1970 with 127 entrants, the New York City Marathon has grown into the world's premiere road race, featuring 30,000 participants, some 2.5 million live spectators, a leading elite field and a guaranteed prize purse of more than $475,000. Broadcast across the nation and in 125 countries worldwide, the 26.2-mile footrace is the United States' most watched one-day sporting event. The New York City Marathon takes place the first Sunday in November each year and is the premier event of the New York Road Runners, the world's most comprehensive running organization.
