BERKELEY, Calif. - (September 18, 2002) - The Clif SHOT Pace Team, sponsored by Clif Bar Inc., is pleased to announce that it has finalized its roster of fall 2002 races. Marathon runners can look for the team at the Twin Cities Marathon (Sept 29) - the USA Championships, Long Beach International City Marathon (Oct 10) and Tucson Marathon (Dec 8). While registration is closed for Twin Cities, marathoners can still register for the oceanfront Long Beach International City Marathon and the fast, downhill Tucson Marathon, complete with extraordinary mountain scenery. The first team of its kind anywhere, the Clif SHOT Pace Team is a fixed slate of highly skilled runners appearing at five marathons throughout the year. Sponsored by Clif SHOT, the energy gel of Clif Bar Inc., the team made its debut at the Los Angeles Marathon in March to high acclaim from all participants and received a red carpet reception at the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati in May. The goal of the Clif SHOT Pace Team leaders is simple: Get a group of runners across the finish line in a set amount of time, while encouraging them to have fun and build camaraderie with fellow runners regardless of their time goals. The pace leader is equal parts running partner, camp counselor and dogsled musher! The Clif SHOT team offers a range of 10 time goals between 3:15 and 5:30, offering runners of all abilities its assistance. Additionally, an 11th leader serves as a "floating pacer," offering support in case another leader is injured or providing assistance with large groups. Clif SHOT Pace Team leaders run even splits throughout the race - meaning that each mile is run in the same amount of time, helping to keep runners from making the common mistake of starting too fast and burning precious energy reserves too soon. Additionally, team leaders remind their groups to take in plenty of fluids and Clif SHOT, a fast-acting, easy-to-digest energy gel that is critical to sustaining endurance and improving overall performance. Serving as coach, motivator, parent and friend, the leaders keep runners' spirits high and legs moving throughout the race. The main difference between the Clif SHOT Pace Team and other pace teams is the high level of experience of the Clif SHOT Pace Team leaders. Carefully selected based on past performances, Clif SHOT Pace Team leaders have all run a minimum of 12 marathons and paced at least five times prior to joining the team. Several leaders have run up to fifty marathons and paced at nearly a dozen others. The group is a unique, high-energy assembly of runners, eager to help other runners across the finish line to a lifetime goal, whether to finish, set a personal record or qualify for the Boston Marathon. NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - (September 19, 2002) - At the 11th Annual Orange County Race for the Cure on Sunday, September 22, another large field of over 25,000 participants is expected and course records could fall again for the second straight year. The Newport Beach tradition is the third largest running festival in California. The challenging 5K course offers an opportunity for athletes to compete in one of Southern California most beautiful areas. The course is within 1/2 mile of the beach and usually has a nice ocean breeze and fantastically enthusiastic crowds. The 5K was designed to wind back through the crowd for the last 2 miles which gives all of the athletes the opportunity to watch the elite race unfold and give a huge emotional boost to our top athletes. In 2000, the course was redesigned to have a wider start line to accommodate over 28,000 participants. The event has grown from 3,800 to 28,000 over the past 11 years and consistently attracted a top flight field of American and international women athletes to compete for the $5,000 Orange County Register Prize purse. The purse goes 10 places deep in the Women's open and 3 places deep in the masters race. In 2000, when the course was redesigned, American Milena Glusac of Fallbrook set a course record of 16:49 which stood for only one year. Last year, among 27,000 spectators, Anna Brezinska defeated Naomi Wangui and Sylvia Mosqueda with a new course record of 16:28 in a very dramatic race where Wangui led most of the race until the last 400 yards when Brezinska surged past and took the victory. Brezinska and Glusac will not be returning this year, but Sylvia Mosqueda is expected to lead the field. Mosqueda is currently ranked #3 behind Deena Drossin and Milena Glusac in prize money earned this year. Also expected to compete are: local athlete Heather Frisone who has just recently won the Revlon Run 5K in 17:01 and South African Carlien Cornilissen are expected to push Mosqueda to a new course record. The master's field will feature defending champion Nancy Tinari who has run a swift 17:15 over the rolling hill course for the past two years. Once again, Southern Californians Ruth Wysocki and Jeanne Lasee-Johnson will be pursuing Tinari. Returning in the Men's field will be local favorites Kevin Broady and Danny Reed. The event is hosted by Pacific Life Financial and is
held at Fashion Island Newport Beach. The event benefits the Orange County
Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and expects to
race $1.5 million dollars for early detection and treatment of breast
cancer. For more information, contact Kathy
