For More Information Contact: Glenn Kass, (309) 269-3634 BIX 7 HONORS KAPHEIM WITH ALL CITY CHALLENGE DAVENPORT, IA - (April 9, 2003) - Officials from the Quad-City Times Bix 7 today officially kicked off registration for the 29th edition of the race with details of the first-ever All City Challenge. The Riverboat Development Authority will sponsor the Nancy Kapheim Memorial Trophy that will be awarded annually to the challenge winner. This year's race is also being dedicated to the memory of Kapheim. The 2003 Quad-City Times Bix 7 is set for Saturday, July 26th beginning at 8:00 AM. This date reflects a return to the last weekend in July. Applications are available at various Quad City Area locations. You can also sign up through the race's official website at www.bix7.com. A valid Visa or MasterCard is required to register online. The All City Challenge will be a fun way to find out which city can be called the "fastest" in the QCA. After the race, the five fastest times from the men's and women's open divisions (29 and under) and the master's men's and women's divisions (30 and over) will be combined. Those times will be divided by 20 for an average time of all the runners that registered from that city. The winning city's mayor will then receive the Nancy Kapheim Memorial Trophy from the Riverboat Development Authority. It is a fitting tribute to Kapheim who was serving as the assistant race director for the Bix 7 and as president of the Cornbelt Running Club when she died suddenly on Dec. 21, 2002 at the age of 55. She supported road racing throughout the Quad City Area and around the country in a manner that went far beyond her official duties. Bix 7 Race Director Ed Froehlich hopes the QCA will embrace the idea and make it a tribute his friend would be proud of. "I know she'll be looking down with that wonderful smile of hers. She'll be saying, 'go get 'em, those hills are a piece of cake,'" said Froehlich. "I can't think of a better tribute to her memory than dedicating this year's race to her and having her name on the trophy for the All City Challenege. I hope everyone will join us this year to honor our dear friend of running and fitness and do this Bix for Nancy."
For More Information Contact: Glenn Kass, (309) 269-3634 KEFLEZIGHI TO DEFEND BIX TITLE AGAINST WORLD DAVENPORT, IA - (April 9, 2003) - Officials from the Quad-City Times Bix 7 announced today that Meb Keflezighi, the 2002 Bix 7 Men's Open Champion, has committed to return to Davenport this July to defend his title. The announcement was made during the kickoff press conference at the Rhythm City Casino's Blackhawk Hotel. The 2003 Quad-City Times Bix 7 is set for Saturday, July 26th beginning at 8:00 AM. This date reflects a return to the race's traditional spot during the last weekend in July. In addition to the race returning to a familiar date, the 29th annual edition of the Bix 7 will once again welcome world-class fields in the elite divisions. Last year, the race was part of USA Track & Field's USA Running Circuit (USARC), serving as the USA 7 Mile Championship for men and women. Keflezighi, a 2000 U.S. Olympian, won in commanding fashion with the third largest margin of victory in Bix 7 history. Keflezighi, 27, is off to a strong start in 2003. Last Saturday, the Team USA California athlete won the USA Men's 8K Championship at the New York Road Runners 8000. On March 8th, Meb captured his third consecutive 15K national title at the Gate River Run in Jacksonville, FL. He also finished second at the USA 12K Cross Country Championships on Feb. 16th in Houston, TX and was 11th at the World 12K Cross Country Championships on March 30 in Avenches, Switzerland. In 2002, the former UCLA star won five national titles (5K, 7 miles, 10,000m, Cross Country 12K and 15K) and finished the year ranked 9th in the world at 10,000 meters. The Mammoth Lakes, Calif. resident went on to finish third in the USARC Overall Men's Standings. The Bix 7 will again have the same prize structure for the top 10 men's and women's finishers. The male and female winners will receive a 2003 automobile from first-year sponsor Lujack's Northpark Auto Plaza of Davenport, the nation's largest independently owned auto mall featuring automobiles from 16 different manufacturers. The prize structure for 2nd place through 10th is as follows: 2nd - $4,000; 3rd - $2,500; 4th - $1,500; 5th - $1,000; 6th - $900; 7th - $800; 8th - $700; 9th - $600; 10th - $500. Burbank Student Wins the Middle School Challenge T-Shirt Contest BOULDER, Colo. - (April 9, 2003) - Alix Elizabeth Heintzman, a Burbank
Middle School student, has won the Middle School Challenge T-shirt
contest. More than two thousand middle school students and faculty
members will wear her design when they run the 25th Bolder Boulder
on Memorial Day. "I had just come home from art class, and was despairing of my assignment to draw a design for the Middle School Challenge t-shirt," said the 13-year-old Heintzman. "So I just started drawing what I thought of when I visualized Boulder. I was actually surprised that it came out as well as it did because I'm no great shakes at watercolor, but I was proud enough when I handed it in to my really cool art teacher, Mrs. Friedman." Heintzman wins MSC t-shirts for herself and family, free entry in the 2003 Bolder Boulder 10K road race, a pair of New Balance running shoes, a gift certificate to the Crossroads Mall and the honor of being an official starter for one of the 2003 Bolder Boulder waves. The Middle School Challenge Advisory Board helped Bolder Boulder staff pick the winning design. "We all loved her 'Boulder Earth' theme," said Scott Fliegelman, MSC director. "With over a 100 entries and many excellent choices, it made for a difficult decision." The Advisory Board, composed of four middle school students, was established in January to represent themselves, their peers and their schools, in helping shape the program and key decisions for the MSC program. Founding members include Tommy Benning, Sunset; Jennifer Wingerburg, Mead; Mia Fuhrman and Trevor Ranney, Summit. "As we continue to grow and include new schools and students from Boulder County and around the state," Fliegelman added, "it has become imperative to include the point of view of the middle school student in order to insure that we continue to deliver a memorable experience for all participants." The Middle School Challenge, sponsored by New Balance, encourages middle school students to participate in fitness activities and develop a life-long commitment to fitness. Race organizers hope to relay the message that physical fitness is fun and something that everyone can participate in regardless of age or physical limitations. About Bolder Boulder The race attracts up to 50,000 runners, walkers, and wheelchair racers, and draws professional racing teams from all over the world to compete for the largest non-marathon prize purse in road racing. The race starts at the north end of 30th Street in Boulder near the First National Bank of Colorado, winds through neighborhoods with live music and entertainment at every corner, and finishes in the University of Colorado's Folsom Field. More than 100,000 spectators watch the festivities from inside the stadium and along the course. Every year, the race makes donations to local charities that provide volunteers to help stage the race. Over the years, beneficiaries have included the Boulder Humane Society, Attention Homes, Younglife, Boulder Optimists, local schools, and church youth groups. The Bolder Boulder is proud to be partnered with the following primary sponsors: Celestial Seasonings, Eldorado Natural Springs Water, Frontier Airlines, Millennium Hotel, New Balance, Seagate Technology and Subaru. |
