Saucony Spotlights 26 Runners Participating in Los Angeles Marathon

PEABODY, Mass. - (February 26, 2004) - Saucony, the official footwear sponsor of the Los Angeles Marathon has identified 26 Los Angeles area community members running this year's race that will make up a team called "Saucony 26." These marathon runners represent the diverse and rich culture that make up runners in the LA area.

"We wanted to go beyond traditional elite athlete sponsorship this year and help paint the L.A. Marathon in terms of its most vital component: the wide swath of participants hailing from all across the greater Los Angeles area," stated Tom Carleo, vice president of marketing for Saucony. "These 26 runners, each with their own compelling backgrounds and stories, truly represent the diversity of this city, and we hope the 'Saucony 26' will inspire others to accomplish goals in their own lives."

Each individual in the program has a unique story. Here is a sampling of the "Saucony 26."

* 91-year-old Ernie Van Leeuwen, the Marathon's oldest participant, who last year set a U.S. 90-94 age group record with his 6:54:25
* 11-year-old twins Adrina and Alexa Goglanian, who will run with their mother Denise to celebrate her 50th birthday
* John Ball, co-chair of Team Parkinson whose affliction with the disease hasn't kept him from the last eight Marathons
* Donn Cottom, whose Rotary team will start the race last and raise money for the eradication of polio for each person they pass
* Kamal Oudrhiri, a JPL engineer whose mind may be on Mars as his feet run an earthly course
* Brian Gillespie and Maureen Kennedy, who met at Mile Marker 6 at the 1998 Marathon and returned to exchange vows at the same point four years later during the 2002 race

In addition to special "Saucony 26" uniforms, Saucony is providing each runner a cash bonus for every mile they complete. A number of team members will donate their Saucony checks to charitable causes.
* Claudio Eshaya will donate his check to St. Mary's Assyrian Church in Reseda.
* Matt Graziano will donate his check to Para Los Niños in Los Angeles.
* Aimee Wyatt will donate her check to Night Basketball and Books Youth Mentoring Program in Pasadena.

The entire 26 Saucony team members will be honored with a celebratory exhibition placed in the L.A. Convention Center March 4-6 that participants and community members can see as they enter to pick up their race numbers and shop at the Emerald Nuts Quality of Life Expo. Members of Saucony 26 will attend at a special press reception in their honor on Friday, March 5 at 2:00pm at the exhibition.

The official footwear sponsor of the 19th City of Los Angeles Marathon, Saucony, Inc. designs, develops, and markets (i) a broad line of performance-oriented athletic shoes for adults under the Saucony(r) brand name, (ii) athletic apparel under the Hind(r) brand name and (iii) athletic and workplace shoes under the Spot-bilt(r) name.
