Lornah Kiplagat's Training Camp Featured on PBS's FRONTLINE/World This Thursday

FRONTLINE/World, PBS's international newsmagazine, on Thursday, March 25 at 9pm (check local listings), will air a feature on Lornah Kiplagat's training camp where local Kenyan women are breaking records and breaking down social barriers by training to join the ranks of the world's elite long-distance runners.

Kenyan men have long ranked among the world's fastest long-distance runners. But while the men of the Kalenjin tribe have competed internationally since the 1960s, Kenyan women with running aspirations received little encouragement or assistance - until now.

In "Run, Lornah, Run," FRONTLINE/World reporter Alexis Bloom journeys to the mountain village of Iten in Kenya's northwest highlands, where one of Kenya's first great women runners has established a women's training camp. Viewers meet marathon star Lornah Kiplagat, who defied both the odds and her poor village upbringing to become an international running superstar, then used her prize winnings to found the training camp.

"Not all these women will become great runners - not all have that talent," Kiplagat says of the young athletes who attend her camp. "But all of their lives will have been changed forever. And that means a different future for Kenyan women."

FRONTLINE/World is co-produced by WGBH Boston and KQED San Francisco and is broadcast nationwide on PBS. For additional information about this show, including extended interviews, maps, suggested readings and much more, visit the website at: www.pbs.org/frontlineworld

LIVE to Headline 2004 Suzuki Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Concert

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - (March 23, 2004) - LIVE, a band that came of age in the early 90s, one of rock music's most creative periods, will headline the Suzuki Rock 'n' Roll Marathon post-race concert at Coors Amphitheatre on June 6, 2004.

The concert culminates a weekend of running and music featuring 20,000 runners and more than 40 live bands positioned along the 26.2-mile marathon course.

LIVE will take the stage at 8pm at the 20,000-seat, open-air facility in Chula Vista, Calif. The concert gates will open at 5:30pm with a special guest performing at 6:30pm.

All race participants and volunteers receive complimentary entry to the concert. Reserved and general admission tickets for the concert can be purchased through all TicketMaster locations, charge-by-phone at 619/220-TIXS (8497) or at www.ticketmaster.com.

With nearly 20 million albums sold, LIVE continues to be a solid force around the world. Their successes include two No. 1 albums on the Billboard Top 200 album chart (Throwing Copper and Secret Samadhi), five No. 1 singles, nine Top 10 singles and No. 1 albums in Australia, Holland, South Africa, Canada, Belgium and New Zealand.

LIVE's new album, Birds of Pray, is a collection of 13 songs that reflect not only the instinctive playing of the band that grew up together but also a generous amount of time allotted for songwriting. Band members include writer/singer Ed Kowalczyk, guitarist Chad Taylor, bassist Patrick Dahlheimer and drummer Chad Gracey.

"I didn't have to worry about deadlines, and I think you can hear that in the record," said songwriter Kowalczyk. "We have a complete album that demands my heart and my attention, and that is incredibly important to me."

The Suzuki Rock 'n' Roll Marathon starts in historic Balboa Park, runs through the Gaslamp Quarter and downtown districts, loops around Mission Bay and Sea World and completes its course at a finish line festival in the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Point Loma. More than 40 bands and 40 high school cheer squads will line the 26.2-mile course providing entertainment and excitement for participants and spectators. A free two-day "Sports & Fitness Expo" will be held on Friday, June 4, from 11am - 7pm and Saturday, June 5, from 9am - 5pm at the San Diego Convention Center.

The American Association of Running Clubs (AARC) and the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) announced their joint sponsorship of the 2004-05 AARC/RRCA Roads Scholar Grants for developing elite distance running athletes. A minimum of four grants of $4,000 each will be provided to two female and two male athletes to help with travel and training expenses thanks to the commitments from AARC and its member organizations.

Carl Sniffen (RRCA) and Henley Gabeau (AARC) will again co-chair the selection committee. Additional information can be obtained from either Carl Sniffen, at csniffen@charter.net, or Henley Gabeau, at henleygabeau@aol.com. Also, applications may be downloaded from www.runningclubs.org or www.rrca.org. The deadline for applications is May 31, 2004 and recipients will be chosen by August 1, 2004.

"We are pleased to be able to fund this great program for developing athletes," said AARC President Jeff Darman. "Working in cooperation with the RRCA, we can again provide a great benefit to the athletes and the sport," he added.

The AARC formed in December of 2002 represents 63 clubs, with 31,000 members, plus 7 events with 114,000 participants. The RRCA currently has about 100,000 members in over 500 chapters.
