Countdown to 2008 U.S. Men's Olympic Marathon Trials Begins in New York NEW YORK - The countdown to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Men's Marathon began in New York City this past weekend with a New York Road Runners (NYRR) sponsored training camp. NYRR hosted 10-20 athletes - who have qualified for the November 3, 2007 Trials - at this year's ING NYC Marathon in order to provide them with a preview of the trials weekend activities and course. The Olympic Trials course will start outside the famed Rockefeller Center in the heart of Manhattan and finish at the historic Tavern on the Green in Central Park, New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg announced last Thursday. |

At a news conference at Tavern on the Green before the race, Wittenberg was joined by USA Track & Field CEO Craig Masback and leading U.S. distance runners Khalid Khannouchi, Abdi Abdirahman and Jorge Torres. Next year's Olympic Trials race will take place the day before the ING New York City Marathon 2007, making for a marathon doubleheader. "New York City will be the center of the marathon world next November with America's best long distance runners kicking off a spectacular marathon weekend," said Wittenberg. "We have put together a fan-friendly race course and national TV coverage to roll out the red carpet for our country's best men, who are now among the best runners in the world." After starting in front of Rockefeller Center at 49th Street and Fifth Avenue, athletes will head up the Avenue of Americas to Central Park where they will enter through Columbus Circle and begin the course's criterion loops: one four-mile circuit followed by four identical five-mile circuits, finishing on the Park's west side at the historic Tavern on the Green. "New York has been the site of some of history's top men's marathon performances," said Masback. "Having the 2008 Olympic Marathon Team Trials in a city with such a tremendous running tradition, and with some of the world's best race organizers, is only fitting. We look forward to what will be a first-class event for our most elite distance runners as they begin their Olympic journeys." A media package featuring national broadcast coverage and live web streaming was also announced as part of an innovative broadcast package. The start will be shown live nationally on NBC's "Today Show" beginning at 7:35am and the race will be streamed in its entirety via the web at NBCSports.com. In addition, a 30-minute highlight show will be broadcast nationally on NBC on Saturday afternoon at 1:30pm EST. A total prize money purse of $250,000, provided by New York Road Runners, was also announced. Currently over 120 men have met the standards to compete in the Trials by virtue of performances at the marathon distance as well as track performances for 5000 and 10,000 meters; the most since the 1996 Olympic Trials in Charlotte, N.C. In the greatest showing of male qualifiers since 1984, 44 men qualified at the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon on October 22 with 20 "A" standard qualifiers. The men's qualifying window will be open until October 7, 2007. For more information on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, visit: USATF.org |

at Mid-Point NEW YORK - (November 5, 2006) - The World Marathon Majors (WMM) leader board saw plenty of movement following Sunday's ING New York City Marathon. Held in near-perfect conditions, women's victor Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia and a surprise win by Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil on the men's side, saw the former move to the head of the WMM standings, and the latter, install himself in a three-way tie for second with Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia and Felix Limo of Kenya. The 2006-07 World Marathon Majors series began with the Boston and Flora London Marathons last April, and proceeded with the real,- Berlin, LaSalle Bank Chicago and finally, ING New York City races. With the inaugural year now complete, Robert K. Cheruiyot (KEN), the winner in Boston and Chicago, retains his commanding lead by a 25-point margin, while Prokopcuka holds a 10-point margin over Berhane Adere (ETH) and Rita Jeptoo (KEN). The World Marathon Majors series functions on a two-year cycle, meaning that it will conclude with the 2007 ING New York City Marathon, at which time the leading man and woman will take an equal share of a $1,000,000 prize purse. Thereafter, the two-year WMM seasons will overlap, meaning that they will run as follows: 2007 / 2008; 2008 / 2009; 2009 / 2010, etc., with the prize money awarded at the end of each year. The top five male and female finishers receive World Marathon Majors points, with 25 for first, 15 for second, 10 for third, 5 for fourth and one for fifth. Added to the 15 she earned in Boston, Prokopcuka thus sits atop the World Marathon Majors leader board at the conclusion of the series' first year. Of the others among ING New York City's top five, only Jeptoo, the winner in Boston - ahead of Prokopcuka - already appeared in the World Marathon Majors standings. The five points she accumulated here boosted her overall total to 30 points, placing her in equal second position with Adere. Deena Kastor of the United States is fourth in the standings with 25 points (her win at London). Dos Santos' win, in contrast, placed an entirely new and unexpected name among the WMM contenders. The 25 points he earned puts him in second place, aside the Flora London and real,- Berlin winners, Felix Limo (KEN) and Haile Gebrselassie (ETH). At the mid-way point of the 2006-07 World Marathon Majors series, the standings are as follows: MEN WOMEN For more information, go to: WorldMarathonMajors.com Return to top / Return to main page Contact: Scott Schricker, (804) 285-9495 SunTrust Richmond Marathon Event Expects Nearly

A host of special features will serve to honor our country's veterans and active duty personnel entered in both the marathon and its companion race, the NTELOS 8K. Among the ways the event will honor Veterans Day include distributing special red, white and blue bibs to be worn by veterans/active duty military personnel running in either race, special bibs to be worn by family and friends in honor of military and veterans with the honoree's name, special True Blue bracelets to be given to veterans and those honoring veterans and active duty military personnel, a military band to play the national anthem at the start of the event, and other special recognition along both race routes. In addition to 13.1- and 20-mile splits and standings as well as finish results, Ironworks will provide photos throughout the event for friends and family who can't attend. Event means big bucks for local economy. The thousands
of out-of-town participants and spectators that invade the Richmond
region this weekend for the SunTrust Richmond Marathon and NTELOS 8K
mean millions of dollars to the local economy, a recent study confirms. 44 down, 8 to go. This Saturday's SunTrust Richmond Marathon will be Virginian Dane Rauschenberg's 45th of 2006. Dane is on a quest to be the only person to run one marathon every weekend in 2006 (52 marathons - without fail - no matter where it takes him), with all the proceeds that he raises going to the organization L'Arche-Mobile, an international federation of communities in which people with a mental handicap and those who help them can live, work and share their lives together. And if that isn't enough, Dane will continue to work at his present occupation during the week and attempt to run every marathon in 2006 under 4 hours! With 44 Marathons down (including the ING New York City Marathon this past Sunday), he is well on his way.
