Headline USA Men's 8K Championship on Saturday The 2005 USA 8K and 2006 USA 10,000 meter champion Jorge Torres from Boulder, Colo. leads the field for the USA Men's 8K Championship in New York City's Central Park on Saturday, March 17. Torres, 26, who ran 22 minutes, 47 seconds to win the U.S. title two years ago, will face formidable competition including 2004 Olympians Abdi Abdirahman and Anthony Famiglietti and rising stars Max King, Matt Gabrielson, Fernando Cabada, Ed Moran and Rod Koborsi. Olympians Dathan Ritzenhein and Adam Goucher recently withdrew from the race because of injury and illness respectively. The New York Road Runners (NYRR) again will host the national championship (the event has not contested in 2006). NYRR also hosted the USA 8K Championship from 2002-05. The prize purse totals $35,000 with $10,000 for the national champion. Additionally, a $25,000 bonus will be awarded to the winning athlete who breaks the current U.S. 8K record of 22:04 set by Alberto Salazar in 1981. |

The race course will cover the last eight kilometers (4.97 miles) of the route that will be used when NYRR hosts the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Men's Marathon on Saturday, November 3, 2007. The USA Men's 8K Championship is the third stop on the 2007 Men's USA Running Circuit (USARC), a USA Track & Field road racing grand prix series featuring national championships from 5K to the marathon. Weekend® Launches New CEO Wellness Campaign ST. LOUIS, Mo. - (March 7, 2007) - Governor Matt Blunt, Mayor Francis G. Slay, County Executive Charlie Dooley, Clayton Mayor Ben Uchitelle and Debra Hollingsworth, Vice President-External Affairs AT&T Missouri, joined Nancy Lieberman, president and J. Kim Tucci, chair of Spirit of St. Louis Marathon & Family Fitness Weekend® to announce the details of the organization's newest event, the CEO Wellness Campaign at a news conference held on Wednesday at St. Louis City Hall. "The focus of the CEO Wellness Campaign is not to determine the fastest or the fittest CEO in the metropolitan area, but rather for CEOs, individually and collectively, to challenge the St. Louis community to get fit and participate in the Family Fitness Weekend on April 14 & 15, 2007," Lieberman explained. In addition, Governor Matt Blunt announced that he will be running the four-person Marathon Relay. The Governor also presented Lieberman and Tucci with a proclamation recognizing the immense impact that the organization's Read, Right & Run Marathon® has on the development of children. Nearly 3,000 students, representing 80 schools, participating in the Read, Right & Run marathon are expected to cross the finish line on race day. This accomplishment will equate to 78,000 books, 78,000 good deeds and 78,600 miles of exercise! The program has been named one of the largest children's races in the country by Running USA and endorsed by the USDA. Each of the speakers applauded the Spirit of St. Louis Marathon & Family Fitness Weekend® for their year around efforts to challenge St. Louisans to set attainable goals and get fit. Beneficiary CARLSBAD, Calif. - (March 12, 2007) - The third annual Wild Miles Adventure Relay will feature a new course and beneficiary, announced In Motion, Inc., the event organizer. The 175-mile running relay is scheduled for April 28-29, 2007. The only event of its kind in Southern California, the Wild Miles Adventure Relay will start at Vail Lake Resort in Temecula, Calif., before heading for the coast to the finish line at San Dieguito County Park located in Del Mar. The previous course started in Borrego Springs and ended at Pine Valley in east San Diego County. Also new in 2007 is a partnership with the Avon Foundation's Need for Speed Against Domestic Violence series. Wild Miles was selected as the official California relay in the foundation's national 10-relay series, which will raise funds to help children who are directly affected by domestic violence. "We are very excited about our new course and our new charity," said Christine Adams, director of marketing for In Motion Inc., the event organizer. "The new start and finish are in beautiful accessible parks where friends and family can easily send off or welcome home the teams." Funds raised will benefit San Diego County agencies and shelters that benefit victims of domestic violence. Teams are asked to raise funds to help end the cycle of domestic violence, so that no child becomes victim or abuser in the future. Team members will trade off running all 30 legs of the challenging course. Leg distances range from four to 12 miles each and leg terrains range from off-road trails to tree-lined country lanes to the historic and scenic Highway 101. In addition to passing through rural and coastal towns, participants will enjoy views of the region's wineries, fresh lakes and varied flora. Teams will be treated to a Finisher's Bash at San Dieguito Park where they will cross the finish line together and receive well-deserved applause, food, beer, entertainment, tee shirts and finishers' medals. Registration is now open. Team divisions include: Corporate, Public Service, Military, All-Open and Masters. The cost is $1000 for six to 10-person teams and $500 for one to five-person teams. Online registration will begin later in March. STRIVE's mission is to assist teens and young adults with intellectual and emotional disabilities in utilizing resources within their community so they can participate as viable members of the community. Based in South Portland, STRIVE presently serves 400 teens and young adults, providing social opportunities through a safe and chem-free environment, employment training, educational classes and other programs.
