Clement Kicks to USA 1500 Three-Peat
By Charlie Mahler, Running USA wire

INDIANAPOLIS - (June 23, 2007) - It's as simple as one, two, three.

Two-time defending USA women's 1500 meter champion Treniere Clement kicked to a third metric mile title in 4:07.04 at the AT&T USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday.

Christin Wurth was national runner-up in 4:07.86, while Erin Donahue grabbed the third IAAF World Championships team spot in 4:08.22. Team Running USA's Sara Hall of Mammoth Lakes, Calif. finished 5th in a PR 4:08.99.

Two-time Olympian Shayne Culpepper, who won the USA Indoor mile title this year and ran a personal best 4:05.98 recently, finished second-to-last in 4:22.35, after having difficulty staying on the lead group after a pair of 66.1 400s opened the race.

Wurth took the lead with 400 meters run, but Knoxville resident Clement, 25, who bided her time until the final homestretch, was rightly confident in her final kick.

"My main focus is pretty much being able to close with anyone in the world," the Georgetown alum Clement said. "My training partner is Hazel Clark, and she's top 10 in the 800, so I know if I can run 800s with her, I know my speed will be there."

Clement is excited for her chance to test her closing speed with the best in the world this August in Japan.

"I would like to make the finals of the 1500 [at the World Championships]," she said. "And have a chance to get a medal there in Osaka as well."

Webb Sets USA Championship Record to Win Exciting 1500
By Sean Hartnett, Running USA wire

INDIANAPOLIS - (June 24, 2007) - Alan Webb of Reston, Va. returned to the winner's circle taking a dramatic sprint win in a meet record 3:34.82 at the USA Outdoor 1500 Meter Championship on Sunday afternoon.

The fast paced race was much of Webb's own doing as he moved to the front 200 meters into the race and pressed a robust pace through a 57.6 opening 400 and 1:56.2 at 800. Webb's front running split the pack in two with half the field including Team Running USA's Gabe Jennings dropped from contention half-way through the race.

Bernard Lagat, who won the 5000m title on Friday night, moved past Webb on the third lap with Leonel Manzano, Chris Lukezic and Said Ahmed a stride back. Webb, 24, pulled abreast of the two-time Olympic 1500m medalist Lagat on the final turn and unleashed a burst of speed over the final 50 meters that sealed the win and triggered an exuberant celebration as he hit the tape. Manzano of the University of Texas edged past Lagat at the line to finish second in a personal record 3:35.29.

Webb clocked 55.3 over the final lap, admitting, "the last 300 I felt great and I just let my body go. To lose the title and get it back was emotional. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it again."

The 2004 Olympian, who won USA titles in 2004 and 2005, pared a tenth of a second off Steve Scott's 25-year-old meet record.

Ortiz, Gates Crowned USA Mountain Running Champions
From Nancy Hobbs

NORTH CONWAY, N.H. - (June 24, 2007) - Anita Ortiz became the first runner to win a second USA Mountain Championship with her victory at Sunday's 20th Cranmore Hill Climb in North Conway. The 43-year-old mother of four from Eagle, CO, won her first title at the Teva Vail HillClimb in Vail, CO in 2003 and bested a talented field this year which included defending mountain champion Nicole Hunt, 37, Deer Lodge, MT and several former Teva U.S. Mountain Running Team members.

Ortiz started the race in third place passing Chris Lundy, 36, Sausalito, CA, in the first 1.5 kilometers. She then chased Nicole Hunt up the first climb gaining some ground with every step. After cresting the hill, Ortiz passed Hunt on the steep downhill section of the course to take the lead which she maintained through the finish. Ortiz clocked 49 minutes, 5 seconds for 8.6 kilometers (two loops) followed by Lundy in 50:04 and Hunt in 52:49.

"I didn't feel the pressure today like I have in the past," said Ortiz in a phone interview following the race. "In fact, I didn't feel like there was a target on my back, I think the other girls had the target this year. I just felt really good today. When I ran the course on Friday, I knew the downhill would be my strength. It reminded me of the 2003 Worlds course in Alaska which was a real heel burner [in fact many of the athletes racing in Alaska sported huge blisters from the friction of the downhill following the race]."

With her win, Ortiz made her fifth Teva U.S. Mountain Running Team, the most by any woman.

Rickey Gates, 26, Boulder, CO, who arrived on Saturday night, focused on making a spot on the mountain team. Gates not only made the team, he earned his first USA Mountain Running Championship with his victory over 2004 USA Mountain Running champion Paul Low, 33, Belchertown, MA.

"Rickey and Paul were stride-for-stride for much of the course," said race director Paul Kirsch. "Some of the mid-packers said they never saw runners go so fast downhill. Rickey told me after the race he wanted to gain as much ground as he could on Paul in the final climb because he knew how strong Paul was on the downhill."

"It was an unbelievable sprint-to-the end finish," added Richard Bolt, Teva U.S. Mountain Running Team leader and USATF liaison for the race. "Rickey crossed the line first and Paul stumbled to finish just 10 seconds behind."

The Senior men ran three loops of the 4.3 kilometer course. Gates was timed in 1:02:48, Low in 1:02:58 and in third, 2004 mountain team member Josh Ferenc, 25, South Acworth, NH, with a 1:06:44. With their one-two finish Gates and Low both earned automatic spots on the mountain team. This is the second consecutive team for Gates and Low's eighth team.

One of the most impressive performances of the day was posted by 16-year-old Zach Rivers, Victor, NY, who won the Junior men's two-lap race in a time just under 47 minutes. Rivers was on the Junior men's mountain running team last year and hopes to make his second team this year.

There were a total of 16 former mountain team members competing today. Some of the early results include Ortiz, Hunt, Lundy, Gates, Low, and Rivers listed above along with Ryan Pauling, 30, Rochester, NY seventh place in 1:10:46, Eric Morse, 42, Berlin, VT, 10th place in 1:13:47. On the women's side, Kelli Lusk, 37, Belchertown, MA in fourth timed in 53:05, Julie Bryan, 38, Jackson Hole, WY in sixth place with a time of 54:16.

Kirsch reported a record number of participants for this year's race with 175 finishers, nearly 100 of whom were USATF members. The race was open to USATF and non-USATF competitors and although the first woman across the finish line was Anna Pirchtrova of the Czech Republic in 46:45, she was not eligible for USATF prizes. Pirchtrova is a top runner on the World Mountain Running Circuit having been on the podium at the World Trophy Race in the past.

Look for Pirchtrova at this year's World Trophy which will be held on September 15 in Saillon, Switzerland. Ortiz, Gates and Low will be representing the U.S. while additional team members will be selected at the USA Trail Championships on Saturday, June 30 in Steamboat Springs, CO, where the top two U.S. men and top U.S. woman will receive automatic berths. Traveling to the West Coast on July 15, competitors will enjoy the third and final Teva U.S. Mountain Running Team selection race, the Mt. Tam Trophy Race in Sausalito, CA where the top U.S. male and top U.S. female finisher will receive an automatic team berth.

The remaining members of the squad, (one male, one female), will be selected by USATF's Mountain Ultra Trail Council with input from the team staff based on results at the selection races, past World Trophy events, national and international racing experience including mountain, road, cross country and track. Athletes MUST run a selection race in order to be considered for the team. To be considered for the team all team members MUST be current USATF members prior to running a selection race.

The Junior mountain team will be selected based on resumes. Details available at: Trailrunner.com

New York Road Runners to Offer Incentive for American Women at ING New York City Marathon 2007

NEW YORK - (June 22, 2007) - Special money incentives and housing and travel assistance will be offered to leading American women distance runners at the ING New York City Marathon 2007 to help support their Olympic aspirations in a new program created by New York Road Runners (NYRR), it was announced Friday by NYRR president and CEO Mary Wittenberg.

The announcement was made during a media breakfast at the AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Indianapolis.

American women who have already achieved the "B" standard of 2 hours, 47 minutes for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Women's Marathon will be invited to compete in this year's ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 4, in pursuit of the "A" standard of 2:39:00. The top 30 accepted athletes will receive travel and housing assistance, and any runner who achieves the "A" standard will receive a $2500 bonus.

The 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Women's Marathon will be run in Boston on Sunday, April 20, 2008 on a multi-loop course.

This special program is part of NYRR's philosophy of encouraging and supporting American long distance running, which will be highlighted this year as NYRR hosts the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Men's Marathon in Central Park on Saturday, November 3.

"These women are chasing the American dream, and New York Road Runners is pleased to provide them a dress rehearsal before their big day next spring in Boston," Wittenberg said. "Seeing the men's Trials up close and personal, and competing in the hyped-up atmosphere we expect for the weekend, can only help them when it is their turn on April 20."
