Dirba, Fulton Win Carlsbad Marathon CARLSBAD, Calif. - (January 20, 2008) - International rivalry and heated team spirit took to the normally laid-back streets of the seaside village of Carlsbad during the Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon held on Sunday. Tesfaye Dirba of Ethiopia cruised to victory in the marathon, winning uncontested in 2 hours, 19 minutes and 26 seconds, while Diona Fulton of Somerville, Mass. won the women's division in 3:07:56. Chargers mania was as evident as marathon mania throughout the morning as hundreds of runners, volunteers and spectators donned blue and gold Chargers attire. "I must have seen a couple of hundred LaDainian Tomlinson jerseys out on the course," said Lynn Flanagan, the Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon race director. Over 9,000 elite and recreational runners from all 50 states and 10 countries participated in the sold-out events held under sunny skies with temperatures ranging from the low 40s to the mid-60s. Dirba, who was running his first marathon on American soil, led wire-to-wire, his sub-2:20 finish time earning him a $1500 bonus in addition to the $500 first place prize. Andy Martin finished second (2:23:45) followed by Benard Songoka of Mexico (2:27:03). Chargers fans may have outnumbered Patriots followers but they didn't out-kick them, at least in the women's marathon. Fulton, a self-described "Pats" fan, held her early lead even after slowing in the final miles. "I was hoping to do a little bit better," said Fulton. "My legs started to go numb at mile 19. They felt like trash." Obed Mutanya of Zambia was victorious in the half-marathon race, his debut at the distance, winning in 1:04:26. Janko Bensa of Serbia was second (1:04:38) and Worku Beyi of Ethiopia took third (1:05:29). Jacqueline Nytipei of Kenya dominated the women's half-marathon division clocking a 1:11:37 victory and earning her a $2500 payday. Jane Kibii of Kenya was the runner-up, finishing in 1:13:57. The marathon and half-marathon courses took runners past North San Diego County's scenic vistas and pounding ocean surf. The event benefited the Charities in Motion Foundation. 17th Carlsbad Marathon MEN WOMEN Half-Marathon WOMEN Complete results at: CarlsbadMarathon.com |

for Participants CLEVELAND - Participants in the 31st annual Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K now have the opportunity to interact online to ask questions, share opinions and news and plan training routes for the May 18 event. Through a partnership with realbuzz.com, the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon recently launched its online community at ClevelandMarathon.com, making it one of the first road races in the country to do so. The Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon's online community features forums, blogs and route planners to help enhance the participants' training and race preparation experience. The blog feature is a way for runners to journal their personal running experience in an "online diary" type format. Additionally, bloggers can use the site's training log function to track their runs and record information about weather, course conditions and other relevant information. Depending on the preference of the blogger, the blogs can be either private or shared with the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon community. The forum feature provides an interactive online community for the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon events, which allows runners to share information among themselves about the race, training, helpful advice and other event-related questions. Runners new to the event and out-of-town runners can ask questions and share opinions in real time. The training route planner provides an opportunity for runners to map and share training runs virtually, instead of having to drive the route or guess their mileage. The service is offered free to the running community and uses detailed interactive maps and satellite images. Runners can also plan and save running routes for future reference. As runners save their routes, they can also search for other routes based on zips codes and cities in order to find running routes when they travel or visit a new area. The 31st Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon will hit the streets of Cleveland on Sunday, May 18, 2008 at 7:00am and weave runners through historic and scenic parts of the city. There will be a 26.3 Mile Rock Party at the finish line featuring food and live music. Those who are interested in participating in the marathon, half-marathon, 10K, wheelchair challenge, walking divisions or kid's race, can register online at ClevelandMarathon.com or call 1-800-467-3826 for more information. Realbuzz.com is the UK's most popular lifestyle and community online networking site, aimed at individuals interested in fitness and nutrition. Realbuzz.com is now extending its services - turn-key, branded forums, blogs and route planners - to the U.S. running event community, providing easy-to-use web tools that enhance the event website and create a community among the participants. Return to top / Return to main page Liz Duncan Memorial Scholarship Fund Raises Over
$23,000 In April 2007, Brooks Sports shared the tragic news it had lost treasured employee Elizabeth "Liz" Duncan. An out-of-control car struck and killed Liz while she was out for a run and waiting at a corner to cross the street. Because many friends, family, co-workers and industry partners expressed interest in honoring Liz by donating to a cause on her behalf, the Liz Duncan Memorial Scholarship Fund was established. Due to overwhelming support from more than 135 individual and corporate donors, $23,984.50 was recently sent to Athletes in Action (AIA), a sports ministry that was very near and dear to Liz's heart, in memory of her. Student athletes who exemplify character, faith and passion qualities demonstrated by Liz on a daily basis can apply for Fund scholarships to attend AIA summer mission camps. CLICK here for a complete donor list, and contact AIA (www.AIA.com) for more information about the Fund. Additionally, on Saturday, April 19, 2008, a Fun Run/Walk will take place to honor Liz in her hometown of Richland, Wash. Proceeds from the event will also benefit AIA.
