Trapp Wins Sixth, Godale Surprises with First USA 24 Hour Title

Kouros sets U.S. All-Comers record; Godale U.S. Open record

SYLVANIA, Ohio (September 18-19, 1999)--Under mild, pleasant skies, 160 ultrarunners set out to cover as much mileage as they possibly could on the 1.1 mile circuit around Olander Lake. The venue is the base site of the Toledo Road Runners Club, who hosted the American all-day/all-night title event here for the seventh consecutive year, in conjunction with the American Ultrarunning Association. The favorites were defending USA national 24-hour champions Sue Ellen Trapp, 53, of Fort Myers, Florida, and Kevin Setnes, 45, of Eagle, Wisconsin.

Trapp coasted to the easiest of her now total of six 24-hour National titles, besting Lynne Werner of Seattle, Washington by some 15 miles.

Setnes, on the other hand, had his hands more than full, as multiple world-record holder Yiannis Kouros of Athens, Greece (universally regarded as the best long-range ultrarunner in history) unexpectedly entered the evening before the race. Yet not only Setnes, but also Kouros, the latter perhaps expecting to coast to a relatively easy win, and everyone else in attendance was surprised by unheralded 29-year old Mark Godale of Aurora, Ohio. A three-time journeyman member of the USA national 100 Km team with no long-range ultra credentials of note, Godale ran the second greatest 24-hour performance in American history, bettering Setnes' American road record by two miles and falling a few miles shy of Rae Clark's American track record. In doing so, he put an all-night scare into the otherwise unflappable Greek phenom, and pushed Kouros to the fastest official 24-hour performance ever run on American soil. Setnes held onto third place overall, and took the American silver medal behind Godale's first national title.

Khannouchi, Ndereba Win Jefferson Hospital Philadelphia Distance Run

edit this article

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Sunday, September 19)-At the 22nd Jefferson Hospital Philadelphia Distance Run, Khalid Khannouchi and Catherine Ndereba again showed that they are the best runners in the City of Brotherly Love. Khannouchi, 28, who also won in 1997 ran 1:00:47 to dominate the men's race, while Ndereba, 27, defended her title in 1:10:31. She also won the 1996 race.

Although Hurricane Floyd passed through earlier in the week, on race day, it was sunny and warm and the course was ready for racing. By 4 1/2 miles, the men's race was down to Khannouchi, defending champion Peter Githuka and Ben Kimondiu.
At 8 1/2 miles, Khannouchi who set a U.S. All-Comers half-marathon record (1:00:27) at the 1997 race took control of the race and went unchallenged to the tape in 1:00:47, the second fastest Philadelphia Distance Run clocking. Githuka finished second in 1:01:37 and Kimondiu third (1:02:22).

"I wanted to run under 61. I came to run a very fast race. I was pleased with my run but I had no one to push me to the finish", said the Moroccan who's next race will be the LaSalle Banks Chicago Marathon.

In the women's race, Colleen DeReuck led the entire way until Ndereba caught the 1997 PDR champion with a half mile left. Ndereba cruised to a 15 second victory over DeReuck, 1:10:31 to 1:10:46. Lidia Grigoryeva was third in 1:10:57.

"I was looking to better my time from last year but my body was not responding," said 1999's hottest road runner who's next race will be the SouthTrust Running Festival 10 Mile in St. Petersburg, Florida.

A record field of over 8000 participated in the half-marathon and 5K. For results, go to the race's website at www.philadistancerun.org.
