Sold out field enjoys scenic course and ideal conditions
SANTA YNEZ VALLEY, Calif. - (May 11, 2013) - On a perfect spring Saturday in the Santa Ynez Valley, Sergio Reyes and Maria Rivera shook the field of nearly 3,000 runners to win the seventh running of the Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon presented by Subaru. Produced by Destination Races, this popular half marathon featured a scenic 13.1-mile course that ran from Santa Ynez through Los Olivos into Solvang.
Reyes of Palmdale, CA and Rivera of Visilia, CA each took home $600 plus a 3 liter bottle of wine and a Riedel decanter trophy. Reyes finished with a time of 1 hour, 7 minutes, 54 seconds, easily defeating runner-up Ivan Medina of Hayward, CA (1:10:09) and third place finisher Eli Rodriguez of Whittier, CA (1:10:34). Reyes won his second consecutive Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon.
Rivera finished with a time of 1:19:35, besting second place finisher Andrea McLarty of Santa Barbara (1:20:37) and third place finisher Maria Castenada of Los Angeles (1:25:56). Second place finishers took home $300 plus a 1.5 liter magnum of wine and third place received $200 and a 1.5 liter magnum of wine. This was the first Wine Country Half Marathon for Rivera and she ran an impressive race despite arriving late the night before and battling a sore hip throughout the race.
"I didn't have much sleep and I my hip was tight and sore, but I pushed hard to run a good race," said Rivera. "The course was challenging but very beautiful. I would love to come back next year."
"It was an absolutely stellar day, we could not have asked for better weather," enthused Matt Dockstader, President of Destination Races. "Santa Ynez and Solvang provided the perfect book ends for today's race and the perfect kick-off to our 2013 Destination Races season series."
The sold out event attracted runners and wine enthusiasts from all over California, plus 43 states and six foreign companies. The awards ceremony and Wine & Music Festival were held in Solvang Park after the race, where local wineries and Firestone Walker Brewing poured for runners, and their family and friends. Event beneficiaries include Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, Santa Ynez Valley Union High School, Chances for Children and the ASPCA (American Society of the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals). The ASPCA and Subaru hosted a "Subaru Love a Pet" event at the finish line of the race. Runners and guests had the unique opportunity to adopt an animal after finishing the half marathon. Runners were also treated to the site of a newborn bison at mile eight on a scenic section of the course in Ballard Canyon.
