Running USA Seeks Next CEO


Job Position: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Reports to: President, Board of Directors

FLSA Status: Full Time Exempt

Location: Remote


The CEO of Running USA will proactively lead the staff, the membership of the organization and the Board of Directors in a collaborative effort to achieve both the short and long term strategic initiatives. They will uphold the Core Values, the Mission and the Vision of the organization. The CEO will represent the entire membership and drive the team to be the leader within our global space.


Duties and Responsibilities include the following:


Development and implementation of the Running USA programs consistent with the oversight and direction of the Board of Directors.

Provide Servant leadership, discipline and effective communication to all.


Acts as the principal liaison between volunteer leadership and the staff, coordinating the flow of information and leading implementation of board decisions.

Responsible for development and execution of processes to ensure effective governance by the organization, including communications, education, board development, and engagement of volunteer leadership.

Accountable for compliance with legal and regulatory obligations of the organization, and promotion of best practices in effective governance.

Strategic Planning and Leadership

Leads implementation of the Running USA Strategic Plan. Fosters a culture of continuous growth and improvement in expanding the Running USA brand, constituencies, and mission impact. In this work, support and reinforcement of diversity and inclusion.

Ensures timely update of strategic and annual operating plans, supporting budgets, and determination of a program evaluation process.

Provides financial oversight and ensures financial sustainability and growth of the organization.

Creates new and additional revenue streams.

Supervises the management of the assets of Running USA and investment of those assets, under oversight of the Running USA Budget and Finance Committee and Board of Directors.

Member and Customer Service

Ensures that Running USA programs and services are meeting the needs of members, partners, vendors and key stakeholders.

Proactive, self-directed and approachable problem-solver who confers a sense of urgency and customer service with members, colleagues, partners and vendors.

External Relations and Communications

Builds effective relationships with organizations and fosters strong communications both inside and outside the organization.

Maintains the role of liaison with other national and international professional organizations whose activities and interests are important to Running USA.


Oversees Running USA’s advocacy to ensure endurance sports have a voice at the state, regional and when needed, national level.

Promotes the image of Running USA and the endurance industry profession through appearances before outside groups and the media, and through supervision of the public relations activities of Running USA.

Staff Management

Provides leadership to staff to accomplish the goals and mission of Running USA, ensuring necessary staffing, training, compensation, and benefits to recruit and retain a strong team.

Conduct annual performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to the staff team.


Qualifications, Experience, and Specific Behaviors:

A successful candidate should possess the following experiences and qualifications:

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree.

A deep understanding of the endurance industry preferred.

Successful senior-level association or nonprofit management experience with oversight of large and small groups.

Always seeking to: learn, adapt, improve and bring new solutions to reality.

Take initiative and be responsible.

Creative thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Outstanding verbal skills, writing skills and presentation creation skills are required.

Comfortable being uncomfortable.
