Surf City Marathon offers free entry to furloughed Government employees

Longest government shutdown in U.S. history has left 800,000 federal workers without pay; Super Bowl Sunday tradition returns to Huntington Beach the weekend of February 1-3, 2019

HUNTINGTON BEACH – January 24, 2019 – The Surf City Marathon and Half Marathon today announced that they are offering complimentary entry to currently furloughed U.S. government employees.

Furloughed employees can receive free entry to participate in the marathon, half-marathon, 5k or mile on the sand distances. Featuring a scenic course that showcases the Huntington Beach oceanfront, the event annually attracts 17,000 runners and will take place the weekend of February 1-3, 2019.

“Our heart goes out to those government employees affected by this now 34-day government shutdown and what better time to get out and run,” said Tiffany Adams, event manager. “We know how running helps people get through tough situations and have allocated a limited number of our remaining entries for those furloughed employees to run the race for free this year. With our mile on the sand and 5k races, there is a distance for anyone to participate in this year.”

To take advantage of this offer, all such employees must register on-site at the event’s expo on Friday, February 1 or Saturday, February 2 and present their valid government I.D. and proof of furlough at the expo to receive an official race bib. The offer is only applicable to furloughed employees who have not yet registered for the race and entries will be limited based on availability.

Event weekend kicks off with an Active Lifestyle Expo on Friday, February 1 from 1:00 pm – 7:00 pm and Saturday, February 2 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the main Huntington Beach Parking Lot, across from The Waterfront Beach Resort. The interactive expo will showcase vendors featuring the latest in running gear, nutrition and fitness apparel.

New in 2019, event weekend will feature a one mile race on the beach. Dubbed as the “Cowabunga Challenge,” the mile on the sand will take place on Saturday, February 2 at 11:00 am and is open to runners of all ages. Finishers of the mile race will receive a free beer (21+) medal and exclusive finishers’ cape. Runners who complete both the mile on Saturday and either the 5k, half-marathon or marathon on Sunday will receive a commemorative football.

Race day begins on Sunday at 6:30am with the marathon, half-marathon and 5k. Runners enjoy one of the most scenic race courses in the United States with spectacular views along the route. Event weekend concludes with a finish line festival and Sand Bar presented by Michelob Ultra. Each runner gets one free beer (21+) to celebrate their achievement with live entertainment before the big game on Sunday afternoon.
