Run Calgary x Calgary Pride launch the Love is Love Mile
Participants will not be asked their gender
(Alberta, Calgary) August 5, 2020 We could all use a little more love right now, right? Run Calgary and Calgary Pride have teamed up in 2020 for the 30th Anniversary of Calgary Pride for the city’s first Pride race and only 1-mile event. The Love is Love Mile celebrates diversity and inclusion and is a healthy and safe place for people who identify as LBGTQ2+ to both participate and be celebrated.
“Participation in sport is a vital and enriching part of many of our daily lives. Unfortunately, Trans and Non-Binary people are often forced to stop playing the sports they love due to bias, violence and a lack of education about trans issues.” says James Demers (He/Him), Executive director of Calgary Queer Arts Society and Diversity Educator.
In 2020, the Love is Love Mile is virtual, which means people register at runcalgary.com and complete a 1-mile run, walk, jog or wheel anytime during Pride week, August 28th to September 6th. Spirit awards and prizing will be awarded through social media for people who participate in the spirit of the event and spread love, share positive stories and dress up.
The registration fee is $25 for curbside pick-up or $30 for mail out and will get you a Love is Love racing bib, a Love is Love enamel pin, a Calgary Pride Spotify playlist, donation to Calgary Pride and access to an online education session on Trans and Non-Binary Identities.
Recognizing that the LBGTQ2+ community has been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 and job loss, anyone wanting to participate but facing a financial barrier is asked to contact Run Calgary for a bursary registration.
“While we had hoped to see The Love is Love Mile launch in-person at the 30th Anniversary of Calgary Pride, we didn’t want to wait to bring more love to our city,” says Kirsten Fleming (She/Her), Executive Director of Run Calgary. “We are learning about the lack of safe spaces in sport for the LBGTQ2+ community and are excited to work with Calgary Pride to provide an equitable opportunity for trans, non-binary and gender fluid participants to compete and join in. Moreover, we hope to facilitate a culture of learning and allyship in the running community through this collaboration.”
In subsequent in-person events, the race will take place in advance of the Pride Festival and participants will be assigned a heat based on ability and not categorized by gender. “This was fundamentally important to ensure that folks could engage in a manner that honours their journey as a person, and not the sex they were assigned at birth.” says Parker Chapple (They/Them), Executive Director of Calgary Pride.
Registration is now open at runcalgary.com
