Probility Ann Arbor Marathon Canceled due to COVID-19 Concerns
Ann Arbor, Michigan — Due to the coronavirus outbreak, now deemed a global pandemic and state of emergency in Michigan, the Ann Arbor Marathon is canceled. The annual event brings together thousands from all over the country. The 9th annual event was scheduled for Sunday, March 22.
Epic Races, the organizers of the event, had been monitoring the status of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the U.S. and abroad. “We were in constant contact with local health department officials regarding best practices for mass participation events in Michigan beginning the middle of last week. We committed ourselves to making decisions based on science provided by advisors, not hysteria. We made changes to the logistics of the event based on what we learned, and had a staff meeting this past Tuesday to finalize plans for 3 upcoming events” said Epic Races Founder & CEO, Eva Solomon, “When we all left our meeting on Tuesday night, we had no idea that less than two days later we would be announcing the cancelation of the marathon and two additional races planned for this coming weekend.” Epic Races also organizes the Pi Run in Dexter, Michigan slated for March 14 and the Waterloo G&G Gravel Bike Race slated for March 15 in Grass Lake, Michigan. Both have been canceled.
Emails have gone out to all participants in each of these races with more specifics. A message from Solomon is posted on the organization’s website, noting details about the cancelations. “Please understand that we love what we do and what we do is put on events. With all we have been doing to make this event the best of the best, the last thing we wanted to do is cancel,” the message states. “May we offer comfort to those whose loved ones have died. Bring peace to those living with uncertainty. Give patience to those who are quarantined and unable to move freely in their communities.” Updates about each race can be found on the Epic Races Facebook page and epicraces.com.
