Running USA Infographic: Runners and Virtual Runs
Earlier this week, Running USA released the 2020 National Runner Survey (NRS), with key information about the typical U.S. distance runner, what distances they run, how many races they participate in each year, and what running brands earn their consumer loyalty.
The survey, conducted between November 2019 to January 2020, also asked about virtual runs. In 2019, 26 percent of NRS respondents participated in a virtual race – meaning an organized event run on their own without traveling to the race itself.
Runners were motivated to run virtually for good swag – 33 percent – and to support a charity they care about – 28 percent. Just 5 percent chose avoiding crowds as their reason for running virtually .. but that was before the COVID-19 pandemic.
