The new local family brand sponsorship is not the only change for the Half Marathon as the course itself has been altered
PHILADELPHIA – October 16, 2017 – The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Philadelphia Marathon is proud to announce that Philadelphia’s own Dietz & Watson has joined the “Marathon Weekend” as the official sponsor of the Philadelphia Half Marathon.
“We are big supporters of ALL things Philadelphia, as a hometown brand, we love it when we can support our city. When the opportunity presented itself to become the Philadelphia Half Marathon sponsor, we jumped on it,” said Lauren Eni, VP Brand Strategy for Dietz & Watson. “We’re also excited to introduce one of our newest high protein snacks to the running community, our Dietz & Watson Originals USDA Organic, No Antibiotics Ever and Hormone Free Beef Jerky. We can’t wait to share our food with runners and spectators over the weekend.”
The new local family brand sponsorship is not the only change for the Half Marathon as the course itself has been altered. Soon after the 2016 race, feedback flowed into race headquarters indicating an overwhelming desire to move the majority of the race into the city. The result is a 2017 course that features 10 miles through Philadelphia city streets - a complete reversal of 2016, whereby 10 of the 13 miles were run in Fairmount Park.
“The runners spoke and we listened,” said AACR Philadelphia Marathon Executive Director Leo Dignam. “It’s not easy closing City streets for a second day but we felt the need to address the runners’ wishes.”
There is another benefit for having the majority of the race along city streets. “Runners for the half will enjoy the same experience as the marathoners,” Dignam added. “They’ll see many of the great historic sites in the city while running the Half.”
The new Half-Marathon route will take runners past the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, City Hall, the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the National Museum of American Jewish History, Ben Franklin’s Grave, the U.S. Mint, the National Constitution Center, Mother Bethel AME Church, the Church of the Holy Trinity on Rittenhouse Square, the University of Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Zoo, across the Girard Street Bridge and its sweeping vistas of the Schuylkill River, then on to Mount Pleasant Mansion, Boat House Row, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and many historic points in between.
Earlier, the AACR was named as the Marathon title partner, an arrangement that is in place for the next three years.
The partnerships serve to benefit both the City and its sponsors. It is worth noting that in 2016 only the 8K had a sponsor in Rothman Institute, and this year, all individual events have sponsors.
