CARMEL, CA – March 25, 2024 – The highly anticipated Big Sur International Marathon Weekend is just around the corner, set to kick off on April 26th with an exciting Race Health and Fitness Expo at the Monterey Bay Conference Center. This event marks the beginning of a weekend filled with exhilarating races, breathtaking views, and a celebration of health, fitness, and community.

The highlight of the weekend will be the Big Sur International Marathon itself, taking place on April 28th. Known as one of the most scenic runs in the world, the marathon offers unrestricted views of the Pacific Ocean and the majestic cliffs of Highway 1. Runners from across the globe flock to this iconic race to experience its unparalleled beauty and challenging course.

In addition to the classic marathon distance, Big Sur Race Weekend offers a range of other race distances, including the Relay, 21-Miler, 11-Miler, 12K, and 5K, catering to runners of all levels and abilities. With nearly 10,000 participants expected to take part across all races, the event promises an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

A staggering 89 percent of participants are estimated to be non-local, making the Big Sur International Marathon a significant driver of tourism and economic impact for the Monterey and Big Sur area. The influx of visitors, along with their families and supporters, contributes to the vibrancy of the local community and businesses.

The Big Sur Marathon has once again forged partnerships with more than 15 charities to harness the power of running for a greater cause. Through fundraising efforts and charitable initiatives, the marathon has become a platform for giving back to the community and supporting those in need. These charities are expected to collectively raise close to $1 million this year through the race. Furthermore, the Big Sur Marathon Foundation, the organization behind the marathon, engages much of the local community as volunteers and gives back over $300,000 annually in support back into the area.

“This event not only showcases the stunning beauty of our coastline but also brings together a global community of runners. Monterey County is excited to host participants from all over the world, and we’re proud of the positive impact this race has on our local community.” says Josh Priester, Executive Director and Race Director for the Big Sur Marathon Foundation. β€œIt’s an honor to see the enthusiasm and support from residents and businesses alike as we prepare for another memorable weekend of running and camaraderie.”
