Official Charity Partner Program launches today with all-time high of 550 causes to support

New York, March 1, 2023 – Runners around the world will find out the status of their application for the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon today when the race’s non-guaranteed entry drawing takes place following an application period that attracted near record levels of interest. New York Road Runners (NYRR) has seen increased demand for all of its races thus far in 2023, with every race through mid-April having already sold out, in addition to the heightened popularity for the marathon application.

The TCS New York City Marathon will take place this year on November 5 and is one of the city’s most anticipated and iconic annual sporting events, attracting runners and spectators of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities from around the world. More than 50,000 runners are expected this year after the race returned to full capacity last year.

“New York Road Runners is seeing unprecedented demand for our races coming out of the pandemic, and people around the world are more interested in running the TCS New York City Marathon than ever before,” said Rob Simmelkjaer, CEO, NYRR. “The TCS New York City Marathon is one of the world’s most iconic sporting events, and this year’s race is expected to be one of the biggest and most exciting yet.”

More than 128,000 applications were received for the non-guaranteed entry drawing and an estimated 5 percent of them will be accepted. Drawing applications were received during a two-week registration period from February 8 to February 22, during which thousands of runners were also able to claim their guaranteed entries for the race through a range of entry methods, including resolution runners from the cancelled 2020 race, NYRR Virtual Racing, NYRR’s 9+1 program, Time Qualifiers, and runners who have completed 15 or more New York City Marathons. Runners who had registered for the cancelled 2020 race had the option to run in 2021, 2022, or 2023, making this the final year for them to use their entry.

Runners who do not receive an entry through the drawing or claim a guaranteed entry can still participate in the event through the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon Official Charity Partner Program, which launches today. Around 12,000 charity runners representing a record 550 causes are expected to participate.

Last year, the TCS New York City Marathon Official Charity Partner Program raised $57.5 million for charity, the most ever for the event. Since its inception in 2006, the TCS New York City Marathon Official Charity Partner Program has now raised more than $460 million for over 1,000 worthy non-profit organizations across the globe. Prior to the start of the official program, the New York City Marathon had served as an outlet for individual philanthropic runners since the 1980s.
