FIVE ISLANDS, N.S. – August 20, 2026
For a few days each month, the Bay of Fundy reveals something extraordinary: its ocean floor. On Sunday, August 16, more than 1,000 participants took advantage of that fleeting opportunity, running and walking across the exposed seabed at the annual Not Since Moses event in Five Islands, Nova Scotia.
Held within the Cliffs of Fundy UNESCO Global Geopark, Not Since Moses is one of the most unique running events in the world. Participants experience the extreme low tide of the Minas Basin firsthand, navigating mud, rocks, streams and the rugged terrain of the exposed ocean floor. This area is renowned for having some of the highest tides in the world, reaching nearly 15 metres. By contrast, during the lowest tides of the year, the ocean floor is exposed for only a few fleeting hours, creating a very small window for participants to experience the unique course.
“It’s muddy, it’s rough, and it’s an absolute blast,” said Sherri Robbins, Executive Director of Blue Nose Marathon. “There is simply nothing else like Not Since Moses. It brings together people of all ages and abilities for an experience that celebrates the incredible natural environment we have here in Nova Scotia.”
With athletes running, walking (and sometimes crawling) through the mud from start to finish, the mess was to be expected. But what about the setup? How does one set up an event that only has a few hours until the tides wash over the course?
The answer: Quickly.
“Atlantic Chip has been timing this event for many years. It took 20 mins to set up. Most of that time was spent trying to get my boots unstuck in the ocean floor mud.” Troy Musseau, Timer from Atlantic Chip Sport Timing said, “AeroTracks are a big win for when you need things done quickly, with little effort. You pull them out of the bag, turn them on, connect, and they’re ready to go.”
Musseau deployed just a handful of ChronoTrack equipment for this sold-out event: 2 MiniTracks, 4 FlashPoints, and 1 AeroTrack for Announcer reads. This setup provided the timer with a seamless system that was rapidly accurate.
“Our timing company, Atlantic Chip, using ChronoTrack technology was able to deploy equipment quickly while delivering fast, accurate results,” said Robbins. “The use of side antennas rather than traditional mats was much more suitable given the terrain of the start and finish area. We were still able to have an announcer system using AeroTrack, delivering that finish-line experience for each participant.”
This might be the only foot race course map that’s covered in blue, but the originality of this event keeps athletes coming back, year after year. While the race itself may only last a few hours, the memories created by Not Since Moses last much longer.
“Dig out your old shoes and come get stuck with us,” said Robbins. “If you’re up for a little fresh, authentic seaside fun, this will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life. Next year’s event will take place on Saturday, August 7, 2027.”
