Hamilton, Bermuda – The Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge (Chubb “BTC”) is celebrating a major success with the achievement of a Gold Certification from the Council for Responsible Sport (“CRS”), a non-profit organisation that works globally with renowned sporting events to develop standards that support socially and environmentally responsible practices in the sports sector. The 2025 Chubb BTC, which took place from January 17-19, was awarded the Gold Certification — two levels higher than the Basic Certification awarded for the 2024 event — for significantly improving its dedication to responsible practices, including community engagement and social and environmental initiatives.
Erin Wright, acting CEO, Bermuda Tourism Authority said, “The Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge has always been a fantastic example of sports tourism, bringing teams and groups to the island and boosting our tourism numbers during what would typically be a quieter time of year. We’re incredibly proud of the race organisers and our fellow sponsors for their hard work. Achieving this Gold Certification is a testament to their efforts to make this event not only a great competition but also one that is socially and environmentally responsible, minimising its impact on our beautiful island.”
“At Chubb, we are proud to support the Bermuda Triangle Challenge in its journey toward greater sustainability and community impact,” said Samantha Froud, Chief Administration Officer, Bermuda Operations at Chubb.
“Achieving Gold Certification from the Council for Responsible Sport reflects the dedication of everyone involved — from organizers to sponsors — in creating an event that not only celebrates athletic excellence but also prioritises environmental stewardship and social responsibility.”
Sports event certification through CRS is a recommended four-year process during which time event organisers submit evidence of their activities using a transparent, credible online framework. The final, comprehensive report tracks five categories of responsible practices and is subject to a thorough verification process by third-party CRS reviewers, which includes on-site visits to ensure the accuracy and validity of submissions. The reports help track the event’s year-to-year progress and can be shared with sponsors, vendors, partners, and local government sustainability departments.
“The Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge has set a new standard for responsible sport, proving that sustainability can thrive even in unique island environments,” said a CRS representative. “Their Gold Certification showcases not just operational excellence but a deep commitment to Bermuda’s people and resources — an inspiring example for events worldwide.”
“A Gold Certification indicates the 2025 Chubb BTC event earned 75% of the maximum points possible according to the Responsible Sport Standards,” said Ali Hochberg, Chubb BTC’s Director of Sustainability and member of the Executive Committee. “This is a truly notable accomplishment to move up from the Basic Certification, which requires a score of 45%, in the span of just one year.”
Ms. Hochberg explained the accomplishment resulted from a number of key changes made between the 2024 and 2025 events including the addition of sustainability guidelines for vendors; contracting a local company to assist in the implementation of a more efficient waste management plan, which increased the percentage of waste diverted to recycling facilities; and the procurement of backyard compostable cups and bin bags for use at water stops and finish festivals.
The Chubb BTC Executive Committee hopes to underscore the importance of leveraging relationships with sponsors and partners to achieve sustainability goals, noting that obtaining a Gold Certification was possible only due to the support of multiple organisations including Aspen Bermuda Limited, the event’s Official Sustainability Partner; the Bermuda Tourism Authority; Chubb; Butterfield & Vallis; Bermuda Craft Brewing; Goslings; MEF; the Corporation of Hamilton; Recycle Bermuda; and — in a surprising, yet very successful collaboration — the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.
Christian Dunleavy, Aspen Group President and Aspen Bermuda Ltd. CEO, said: “Sports should not only inspire excellence but demonstrate what collaboration, accountability and community engagement can achieve. The Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge accomplishes that and much more — growing from its humble beginnings in 1975 to becoming a premier event, attracting both the local and global running community. Aspen is proud to be a long-time supporter, and we congratulate the Executive Committee on this well-deserved and significant milestone.”
