More than 30 schools and youth-serving organizations were awarded funding to enhance their Kids of STEEL programming, provide transportation to race day

PITTSBURGH – P3R has awarded more than $30,000 in grants to 30 local schools and organizations to inspire more kids to MOVE through Kids of STEEL in 2023. This year’s Kids of STEEL grants provide opportunities for sites to enhance their programming and inspire more kids and families to participate.

“Our goal is to give every child in our region the opportunity to participate in Kids of STEEL and learn the benefits of MOVING while setting and achieving goals,” said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO. “These grants are a great opportunity for Kids of STEEL sites to expand their programming in the ways that work best for their community, whether that’s buying new equipment, hosting training events or providing transportation to race day.”

This year’s recipients will use the funds for fitness equipment, adaptive P.E. equipment, running shoes, nutritious pre- and post-practice snacks, incentive prizes and more. P3R also awarded nearly $10,000 in grants to help Kids of STEEL sites provide transportation to the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon and the UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K Run on May 6.

“For the 5th year, I am excited to bring our community down to participate in the UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K! Last year, I brought with me 50 participants. This year, my goal is 75!” said Stephanie Guglielmi, the Kids of STEEL coordinator at Monessen Middle School and High School. “The funding that I receive from the grant allows me to order team t-shirts, register all students, and provide snacks and lunch post-race. This event allows all students to be involved without the cost being a factor.”

The award-winning Kids of STEEL challenges participants to complete 25 miles of physical activity. Students will celebrate the completion of the program during the 2023 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend of Events, scheduled for May 5-7. This year a record of 10,000 kids and 229 schools and organizations are participating in the program. For more information about Kids of STEEL, click here.
