Veteran sports and events executive to lead P3R into next phase of growth
PITTSBURGH (Sept. 1, 2026) — P3R announced today that its Board of Directors has appointed Jim Popovich as Chief Executive Officer, effective September 6. Popovich succeeds Bob Shooer, current Board President, who has served as interim CEO since July 2026.
“Jim is stepping into this role at a pivotal moment for P3R,” said Bob Shooer, Interim CEO and Board President. “He brings a deep understanding of our organization, our mission, and the people and partners who make P3R successful. His strategic vision, strong relationships, and commitment to inspiring any and all to MOVE make him the right leader to guide P3R into its next chapter and expand our impact across the region and beyond.”
Popovich joined P3R in 2021 and has served as Chief Strategy Officer and Vice President of Strategic Partnerships. In these roles, he has been instrumental in shaping P3R’s long‑term strategy, driving organizational growth, and cultivating partnerships that elevate P3R’s brand and enhance the participant experience across its events and programs. Prior to joining P3R, Popovich spent more than 20 years with the Pittsburgh Pirates, including serving as Vice President of Ticket Sales & Service.
“I’m honored to lead P3R and build on the incredible foundation that has made this organization such an important part of our community,” Popovich said. “At its core, P3R is about bringing people together and creating opportunities for individuals of all ages and abilities to connect, find inspiration and discover the power of movement. As we look to the future, I see opportunities to strengthen our relationships throughout the community, deepen our partnerships and expand access to experiences that help more people feel connected and inspired to MOVE. I’m excited to work alongside our talented team, partners and community to build an even stronger, more connected P3R and create a lasting impact for Pittsburgh and beyond.”
Shooer will continue to serve as President of the Board, ensuring a smooth and seamless leadership transition.
P3R continues to see record participation across its events and programs, expanding access to movement for people of all ages and abilities. In 2025 alone, more than 115,000 participants—from first‑time runners and walkers to elite athletes—took part in P3R events and programs, further strengthening Pittsburgh’s reputation as one of the nation’s premier running destinations.
