April 22, 2026 — Racing for Sustainability today announced a transformative shift in its membership model alongside the launch of a new Sustainability Support Fund, both designed to remove cost barriers and accelerate the adoption of environmentally responsible practices at running events of all sizes.
Guided by its mission: “We envision a world where sustainability is as integral to a race as the start and finish lines,” Racing for Sustainability is simplifying how events engage with environmental initiatives across the endurance industry.
Racing for Sustainability has transitioned from a tiered pricing structure, previously ranging from $250 to $1,500 per event, to a flat $50 membership fee for all races. The decision reflects a core philosophy: make it possible for race organizers to invest more directly in sustainability efforts rather than administrative costs.
Members continue to receive access to a robust library of practical resources, including guides on:
- Carrying Your Own Hydration
- Runner-Focused Waste Diversion Signage
- Refill Station Hydration
- Sustainable Run Club/Crew/Group Engagement
- Sustainable Spectators
- On-Course Waste Handling
- Race Day Bottle Collection
- Sustainable Swag Alternatives
- Waste Diversion Strategies
- Organizing Plogging Events
The newly launched Sustainability Support Fund will provide targeted financial grants to Racing for Sustainability member races to support the implementation of high-impact environmental initiatives. Funded through brand partnerships and Racing for Sustainability Champions, the program is designed to turn intention into action.
- Examples of supported initiatives include:
- Recycling and composting programs to divert waste from landfills
- Reusable hydration systems that eliminate disposable cups
- Sustainable race materials, including alternatives to synthetic bibs
- Waste reduction strategies and participant education efforts
The fund demonstrates how even modest investments can drive meaningful change:
$50 can replace approximately 325 traditional Tyvek bibs with sustainable hemp alternatives
$75 provides 50 reusable SpeedCups, eliminating thousands of paper cups
$105 funds a TerraCycle box to divert gel and nutrition wrappers from landfill
$250 covers composting services for a small race
$500 supplies 40 quick-fill pitchers for cup-free hydration at a 10K
Racing for Sustainability invites events at any stage of their sustainability journey to join a growing coalition committed to improvement.
“Races don’t have to be perfect ;they just need to be willing to take the next step,” said founder Tina Muir. “By lowering barriers to entry and directly supporting implementation, we’re helping events move from ideas to impact.”
Through this combined approach of accessible membership and direct funding, Racing for Sustainability aims to reduce the environmental footprint of running events, showcase practical, scalable sustainability solutions, and inspire widespread adoption of responsible race practices.
