Full-Scale 2022 Marathon Weekend Planned for Sept. 30 – Oct. 2

St. Paul, Minn. – April 6, 2022 – Registration for the 40th Anniversary Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon will open to the public at 10 a.m. CDT Thursday, April 7. The race will run from downtown Minneapolis to the State Capitol grounds in St. Paul on Sunday, October 2.

The marathon and the rest of the events of Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend (Sept. 30 – Oct. 2) are set to take place at full capacity, event organizers Twin Cities In Motion have announced.

“We’re excited to be launching the anniversary event,” Twin Cities In Motion Executive Director Virginia Brophy Achman said. “We are eager to celebrate an important milestone for the marathon and the Minnesota running community. We have been looking forward to this anniversary for a long time and are excited to be able to celebrate it in a big way this year.”

The 2020 edition of the marathon was cancelled due to the pandemic and last year’s race was limited to fewer than 4,500 marathoners as part of the event’s Covid safety measures. To celebrate the anniversary of the event’s first edition in 1982, organizers are planning:

  • More Spectator Support including the new Diane & Alan Page Community Cheer Challenge.
  • Added Inspiration and Beauty, the Minnesota artist community will now be creating live art experiences on course and at the finish line.
  • Greater Community Impact, with a goal to help raise a record $1.4M for over 40 non-profits through our Charity Program.
  • Expanded Media Coverage, live start to finish race-day streaming in partnership with KARE 11.
  • Support for Record Level of Youth Runners, welcoming hundreds of youth 18 and under via our new TC Kids Run Free program.

“We’re looking forward to honoring everyone – runners, volunteers, spectators – who made the event what it is over the last 40 years,” TCM President Dean Orton said. “We also see the anniversary as a new start line for dedicating our work to deepening our community impact and creating greater inclusivity.”

Registration for the marathon will be conducted online through the Twin Cities In Motion website, tcmevents.org, beginning at 10 a.m. CDT April 7. Registration will also open for the following Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend events:

  • Medtronic TC Family Events
  • TC 5K, presented by Fredrikson & Byron P. A.
  • TC 10K, presented by Dermatology Consultants

Those events will take place at the State Capitol grounds on Saturday, October 1. Registration will also open for the TC Loony and TC Ultra Loony Challenges – where runners participate in the 5K and 10K prior to running either the Medtronic TC 10 Mile or marathon the following day. The registration drawing for the Medtronic TC 10 Mile held on October 2 will open July 7.

Twin Cities In Motion expects more than 30,000 runners to participate in the 2022 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend, including a sell-out field of 8500 runners in the marathon and more than 11,000 10 mile runners.
