Race officials advise all athletes to take some very basic steps to ensure safety while running during warm or hot days, including adjusting pace and hydrating properly

Santa Monica, CA – September 5, 2024 – Organizers of the Santa Monica Classic, scheduled for Sunday, September 8, are closely monitoring weather forecasts predicting unseasonably high temperatures for the Los Angeles County area. As of now, the event’s 5K, 10K, and Kids Run are expected to proceed as planned.

Safety for participants, volunteers, and staff remains a top priority, and officials are prepared to make adjustments as needed. Potential changes could include modified race start times or altered course distances to mitigate the impact of the heat on runners.

“We are continuously evaluating conditions and are ready to implement any necessary measures to ensure the safety of everyone involved,” said Stacy Ferraro, Senior Director of Operations for the event.

The revamped race route includes a new start line conveniently located near the familiar finish line on Ocean Avenue. Runners will enjoy more distance along Ocean Avenue with a scenic blend of city streets and panoramic coastal views, with a newly located finish festival on the 3rd Street Promenade. The pedestrian-friendly zone, known for its vibrant atmosphere, offers runners and spectators alike a perfect backdrop to celebrate their achievements.

“We are excited to welcome runners to this year’s Santa Monica Classic, where they can experience a community coming together to celebrate fitness, fun, and the scenic beauty of downtown Santa Monica,” said Andrew Thomas, CEO of Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. “This event is a fantastic way to showcase our community’s charm, the many businesses Downtown, and the refreshed course improvements, which will surely provide an unforgettable experience.”

Sunday’s race is also set to raise the competitive bar by hosting the 2024 Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) National 5K Championship, marking a prestigious addition to the 3.1-mile distance. Founded in 1958, the RRCA is the oldest and largest distance running organization in the United States with over 1,500 running club and event members representing 200,000 runners.

In addition to the new competitive aspect of the race, this year over 200 people are participating on Team TMF, the fundraising team of The McCourt Foundation (TMF), raising over $33,000 in support of TMF’s mission to cure neurological diseases and build a healthier world.

WARM RUNNING TIPS

Be prepared to participate in the warm weather this Sunday by following these tips:

Hydrate Properly

* Before the race: Start hydrating well in advance. Drink plenty of water the day before the race, and include electrolyte-rich drinks to maintain your body’s balance.

* During the race: Drink when you’re thirsty, and take advantage of water stations. Don’t wait until you’re dehydrated to drink.

* After the race: Continue to rehydrate and replenish lost electrolytes.

Dress for the Heat

* Lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing: Wear breathable fabrics that help wick sweat away from your body.

* Light colors: Light-colored clothes will reflect the sun’s rays and keep you cooler than dark-colored ones.

* Hat with a brim: Protect your face from direct sunlight and keep your head cool.

Use Sun Protection

* Sunscreen: Apply water-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to all exposed skin to prevent sunburn.

* Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from UV rays and improve visibility if sunny.

Pace Yourself

* Adjust your pace: Don’t push for a personal best. Slow down and listen to your body. Running in heat puts extra strain on your body, so be mindful of your limits.

* Walk if necessary: Take walking breaks when needed to lower your heart rate and avoid overheating.

Listen to Your Body

* Watch for warning signs: If you start feeling dizzy, nauseous, faint, or disoriented, slow down or stop immediately. Seek medical assistance if needed.

Stay Cool Before the Race

* Pre-race cooling: Stay in the shade before starting, or use a wet cloth to keep your body temperature down
