Initiative Gains Momentum Following Strong Response from Race Directors at Running USA Industry Conference
(Los Angeles, CA – February 20, 2026) – Start Without a Shot, the global initiative to replace traditional starter pistol, airhorn and cannon sounds at road races with inclusive, research-backed alternatives, today announced a landmark achievement: World Athletics has formally amended its competition rules to allow alternative sounds to start races beyond gunshots, airhorns, and cannons.
The rule change marks a historic shift for the sport and removes one of the final structural barriers to broader adoption of non-triggering start sounds at sanctioned events worldwide.
The announcement was met with significant enthusiasm at this year’s Running USA Industry Conference, where Start Without a Shot leadership met directly with race directors from across the United States, United Kingdom and Japan. Many expressed interest in piloting alternative start sounds at upcoming 5Ks, half marathons, and marathons as part of broader efforts to prioritize athlete mental health, inclusivity, and modern race production standards.
“Sound is incredibly powerful,” said Kirkland Alexander Lynch, Global Chairman of Start Without a Shot.. “For decades, the sport has relied on a sound that can be deeply triggering for veterans, refugees, survivors of gun violence, and others. Now, with World Athletics formally allowing alternatives, there is no rule-based reason not to evolve.”
The Start Without a Shot sound was developed by award-winning sound designers in collaboration with advisors associated with both Harvard Medical School and the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. The sound was tested across athletic and neurological settings before its global debut at the 2024 Kyiv City Marathon (now known as the Nova Post Free Barrier Marathon), where it replaced the traditional starter pistol.
Since its debut, the initiative has continued to gain international traction, with growing interest from race organizers, governing bodies, and advocacy groups. The recent rule change by World Athletics further legitimizes the movement and creates a clear pathway for implementation at sanctioned events around the world — including qualification races.
Start Without a Shot’s long-term goal is to make inclusive start sounds the global standard ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
