The final race in the Triple Crown Challenge continues a trend of increased demand

AVALON, Calif. – The annual Catalina Island Marathon is returning on Nov. 14, with limited spots remaining and event organizers expecting to sell out registration ahead of race day. The expected sell-out comes after a record-breaking registration year for the full Run Catalina Race Series, which includes the sold-out Avalon Benefit 50 Mile/50K Run in January, and the sold-out Hi-Tec Catalina Island Marathon in April. As top events in running see growing participation, the Run Catalina series boasts an average 30% increase in demand year-over-year.

“The trail running industry continues to see growth year after year, and our registration numbers greatly reflect that,” said Mike Bone, president and CEO of Spectrum Sports Management, producer of the Run Catalina Island series. “We’re thrilled to see interest growing in this amazing sport, and look forward to welcoming new and old trail runners to our one-of-a-kind courses to experience the beauty of Catalina Island on foot.”

The Catalina Island Half Marathon offers three distances: the half marathon, 10K and Kids Fun Run. The half marathon course takes runners through hilly terrain filled with challenging climbs, scenic peaks and ocean vistas. Starting in the town of Avalon, participants pass the historic Wrigley Mansion before ascending into the island’s interior, where they are rewarded with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. The course then winds downhill through the Wrigley Memorial before finishing back in town.

The Catalina Island Half Marathon is a part of Run Catalina’s Triple Crown Challenge. The challenge involves completing all three Run Catalina events within a 12-month period. This includes the Avalon 50K or 50 Mile, Hi-Tec Catalina Island Marathon and Catalina Island Half Marathon. Runners may begin their Catalina Island Triple Crown journey with any one of these races, but all specified distances must be completed within a 12-month period, meaning they must finish all three races consecutively once they begin. Athletes who complete the challenge receive a Triple Crown finisher jacket, Hi-Tec shoes and a one-of-a-kind belt buckle.
