The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) is a non-profit organization with a mission to promote a healthy lifestyle through sports, especially running. The B.A.A. is committed to a world where all people can access and benefit from running and an active lifestyle. The B.A.A. advances its mission and vision by organizing mass-participatory running events such as the Boston Marathon, creating or supporting community fitness events, and sponsoring a running club that serves the greater Boston area.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the Chief Community Officer, the Youth Program Manager will lead the development and delivery of the B.A.A.’s youth engagement initiatives. This role is responsible for creating meaningful opportunities that introduce young people to running, inspire them to build lifelong healthy habits, and strengthen the B.A.A.’s relationships with youth-serving organizations across Greater Boston. Through signature events, year-round programming, and community partnerships, the Manager will help ensure that more young people experience the joy, confidence, and community that running can provide while advancing the B.A.A.’s mission and vision.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and oversee year-round youth engagement opportunities that extend the B.A.A.’s impact beyond race weekends, including the growth of the Mini Marathoners program and other innovative programming.
- Lead the B.A.A.’s participation in community-based youth initiatives, such as the City of Boston Summer Sports Camps, International Day of Play, and other mission-aligned events.
- Build, strengthen, and manage relationships with schools, youth-serving organizations, municipal agencies, coaches, and community groups to expand access to running and physical activity.
- Drive the planning and delivery of the B.A.A.’s youth events and programs, including the B.A.A. Youth Mile, Youth Races at Distance Medley events, Invitational Scholastic Mile, Boston Middle School Cross Country Championship, BRC Youth Track Meets, and future youth initiatives.
- Manage assigned program resources, ensuring responsible stewardship and alignment with organizational priorities.
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of the B.A.A.’s youth engagement strategy and programming, in partnership with the Chief Community Officer.
- Collaborate with internal teams to ensure youth programs and activations are well planned, appropriately staffed, effectively promoted, and successfully executed.
- Monitor program outcomes, participant feedback, and engagement metrics to evaluate impact, identify opportunities for improvement, and inform future program development.
- Ensure compliance with youth safety policies, mandated reporting requirements, and organizational protocols.
- Coordinate with the Volunteer team to ensure appropriate volunteer support and staffing for youth initiatives and events.
- Identify new opportunities, partnerships, and best practices to expand the B.A.A.’s youth engagement and increase access to running and physical activity.
- Represent the B.A.A. externally, serving as a visible ambassador for the organization’s youth engagement efforts and cultivating relationships with community partners and stakeholders.
- Support the Chief Community Officer in advancing the B.A.A.’s broader youth engagement and community impact strategy.
- Other duties as assigned.

- 3-5 years of experience managing youth programs, community engagement initiatives, education, recreation, sports-based youth development, or related programming.
- Demonstrated success planning and executing events or programs that serve children, youth, families, or community organizations.
- Passion for expanding access to sport, physical activity, and healthy lifestyles for young people.
- Exceptional relationship-building skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across schools, nonprofits, municipal agencies, community organizations, and internal teams.
- Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Experience developing new programs or improving existing initiatives using participant feedback and data.
- Bilingual (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Chinese, or Vietnamese a plus).
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a highly collaborative team environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Experience with Salesforce is a plus.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and B.A.A. event weekends throughout the year.

WORK EXPECTATIONS AT B.A.A
We are a hands-on team and seek employees who are passionate about our work and service to our community. The Youth Program Manager is a 40-hour/week, exempt position. This role will require working some weekends and evenings with longer and/or non-traditional work hours surrounding events. Limited local travel required.
Hybrid work schedule (combination of in person and remote work possible).
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The salary range is competitive and commensurate with lived and professional experience. The target hiring range for the role is $70,000 to $75,000 per year.
