MONTEREY, CA – The 2023 Monterey Bay Half Marathon, held on November 12th concluded with resounding success, bringing together thousands of participants and spectators for a spectacular display of athleticism, camaraderie, and community spirit.

With the breathtaking backdrop of the picturesque Monterey Bay, the event once again proved a weekend highlight on the regional calendar, attracting nearly 9,000 runners from across the U.S. to compete in this one-of-a-kind race.

Festivities kicked off Friday with a health and fitness expo, followed by 3K and 5K race distances on Saturday, and the half marathon on Sunday.

This year Nico Montanez, a 2:09 marathoner from Mammoth Lakes, California was the first male finisher with a time of 1:03:57. First place female was returning champion Joyline Chemutai, 29, of Kenya. She crossed the finish line with a time of 1:10:21, just over 30 seconds faster than last year.. Neely Gracey, 33, of Lafayette, Colorado, was second in 1:12:21 and was using the race as a tune-up for the Olympic Trials in February of 2024.

The race route showcased the stunning beauty of the Monterey Peninsula, taking runners along the iconic coastline, through charming neighborhoods, and past renowned landmarks. The breathtaking views, beautiful sunny skies, and fast course provided a memorable experience for all participants.

The Monterey Bay Half Marathon continues to be a platform for charitable giving. The race is part of the Big Sur Marathon Foundation’s events, of which the foundation commits an impressive $300,000 in grants annually to give back to various Monterey County non-profits.

The local community played an integral role in the success of the event, with enthusiastic support from residents and businesses. Their energy and hospitality added an extra layer of warmth and encouragement for the participants. Among the local business supporters are Fleet Feet Monterey, Monterey Regional Airport, Alvarado Street Brewing, Monterey Marriott, Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, the Monterey Herald, KSBW, and more. This event wouldn’t be possible without the support of the City of Monterey and Pacific Grove, in addition to all the partners that make this event possible.

“Today was extraordinary. There was incredible energy throughout the weekend from the expo to the 3K / 5K, and on race day today,” says Josh Priester, Executive Director of the Big Sur Marathon Foundation. “We want to thank the participants, board, race committee, contractors, and volunteers. They make it all fly.”
